Queer Town: L.A. Prop. 8 Protest Targets Obama, Warren

This Saturday night President-elect Barack Obama will continue to get an earful he probably never expected.

Join the Impact, an Internet-based grassroots group that organizes national protests against Proposition 8, will host candlelight vigils in Los Angeles and other cities to denounce the passage of Prop. 8 and Obama's tone-deaf decision to ask Rick Warren to lead his inauguration's invocation. Warren is an Orange County evangelical minister who was a loud and influential supporter of the "Yes on 8" campaign, which successfully took away the right for gay and lesbian couples to marry in the Golden State.

"If we truly are an equal and free country," says Amy Balliet, founder of Join the Impact, in a press release, "then everyone would have the same legal protections. Until then, our lack of rights leads to a second class status. This event will shed light on our struggle and bring the conversation of equality to the dinner table this holiday season."

Barack Obama, who has been hammered by straight and gay bloggers, activists, and political pundits, will become the focus of this conversation on Saturday, December 20, at 5 p.m., when protesters will take to the streets at Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue.

On Facebook, there are already more than 700 confirmed protestors for the Hollywood and Highland event, and another vigil will take place in Silver Lake at the Vista Theater. Join the Impact has also organized protests in San Francisco, New York, Washington D.C., and other cities, with the Warren controversy becoming a central rallying point.

Obama, who made few campaign stops in California and saw little of the Prop. 8 battle in person this summer and fall, still defended himself as a "fierce advocate" for gay rights at a Chicago news conference last night.  He does not appear to be backing away from his choice of Warren.

This major political goof, though, may not be such a bad thing for the gay community. Intent on making sure Obama comes through on his campaign promises to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and the Defense of Marriage Act, power gays now have a solid gold bargaining chip for quick action, with a whole bunch of angry gays and lesbians to back them up.  The newest chant on the streets, in fact, can already be heard: "Seize the Day!"

Jim says:

I'm really disappointed in this reaction from the gay community.

Barack has gone out of his way to show that he really supports the gay cause.

Bringing Rick Warren to make a speech isn't going to change his support for the gay issues.

Let's get over it and embrace the great progress made with his election.

Chris says:

Barack's decision to bring Rick Warren in flies in the face of everything he stands for.

The gay community has the right and the responsibility to stand up against tyranny and discrimination.

If warren said anything as remotely discriminatory about any other minority group he would not have a place in this inauguration. The reality is that it is OK for him to discriminate against gays because the majority of Americans do. If we don't say enough is enough and that the preaching’s of warren are unacceptable than we are condoning his bigotry and discrimination.

If that's fine with you then great but it NOT fine with me and I intend to make that known.

I'm really disappointed in the Gay community's propensity for taking crumbs and saying "thank you massa"! I pay federal and state taxes and EXPECT my country to extend me the same rights and freedoms as every other American. Nothing Less!

Pie-Kun says:

"Barack has gone out of his way to show that he really supports the gay cause. "

Excuse me, but how exactly has he done that? There was a reason more gays supported Hillary Clinton in the primaries. Though she has the same position on same-sex marriage, Hillary marched in many many gay pride parades, and would talk about gays more than you would expect her to given her status.

Obama? Sure, he's said some things about gays. But his actions speak louder. In the primaries, he invited a preacher who claimed to be "cured" of homosexuality and called being gay a "curse". I believe Obama himself had never marched in a gay pride parade (despite having many opportunities to) until June of this year.

Now don't get me wrong. Though I supported Hillary in the primaries, I fell in line and voted for Obama in November. I also voted against Proposition 8, which we all know passed.

The timing is really what irks me. We in the gay community have been dealt a huge blow with Prop 8 passing, and the right-wing noise machine has been blaring loudly that we are "rioting" and trying to "kill Christians". It seems like a REALLY bad time to bring Rick Warren on.

I understand Obama wants to bring both sides in this thing. I praise him for that. But the person offering the prayer at his inauguration should be someone who embraces ALL Americans. Not just whites. Not just Christians. Not just Straight people. Not just men. EVERYONE. Someone who has called abortion a Holocaust, and has compared gay relationships to raping children does not seem to me to be someone who embraces everyone.

I am happy Obama is bringing both sides here, but I think a prayer is the wrong venue to be inserting partisans.

Bobby McGill says:

A suggestion for his prayer:

Dear Lord.

Thank for blessing us with the opportunity to be here on this historic occasion, as we install Barack Hussein Obama to the highest office in our country. And, while someday he will surely burn in hell, for at least the next four years he will need Your light to guide him through these troubling times.

Yes Lord, troubling times indeed. As our beloved country is assaulted on all sides by those who would kill our babies, poison the minds of our youth and frolic nude in hot tubs with others of the same gender. Oh yes, and the terrorist, too Lord. Please help us with them.

In closing Lord, I would once again like to say thank You.'Were it not for You and the 30 million people who bought my book "A Purpose Driven Life" --on sale now at amazon.com for only $14.95 plus shipping-- I would not be here to witness this monumental day when a man, whose people's slavery Your good book endorsed, was elected to the presidency of our great nation.

So the morons who bought into all the hopey-changey BS and projected their desires onto an empty suit are upset with their Messiah? Who cares? Maybe in the next election they will pull their heads out of whatever orifice they are in and examine the candidates more closely.

Other than not being Bush, how exactly has Obama "gone out of his way for the GLBT community?"

easydoesit says:

This inauguration SHOULD have been a celebration for the people who SUPPORTED Obama - instead, gays & women's rights were thrown under the bus. Sorry if anyone disagrees, but this is a major disappointment to me and my partner. I'd love to hear how the black's would have responded if Obama invited a Grand Wizard from the KKK to speak at his inauguration. Warren is just as bad to GLBT & Women's rights. Obama can build bridges before & after the inauguration, and not use 1/20 as a pandering day. I've been a registered Dem for the past 34 years - my partner and I just changed our party to Independent.. I also notified 'change.gov' and 'dnc.org' of the change.
