The Last, Passionate Rant of a Long Night in West Hollywood

The protesters were different this time around. They were young and gay and straight and angry and ready to walk for miles, up and down and across West Hollywood and Hollywood. It had been something they had been doing since the "No on 8" rally on San Vicente Boulevard broke up at eight-thirty in the evening with another, almost cliche rendition, at this point, of "We Shall Overcome" after another gay rights loss. Instead of singing folk songs all night, the protesters took to the streets.

"No on 8" protesters march on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood early Thursday morning.

Now it was twelve-thirty on early Thursday morning, exactly 24 hours after the "No on 8" campaign ended it's party at the Music Box Theater on Hollywood Boulevard before all of the results for the Proposition 8 race had been tallied. The 300 or 400 protesters started at San Vicente Boulevard, walked east on Santa Monica Boulevard, took a left onto Crescent Heights Boulevard, headed north to Sunset Boulevard, and turned around at Fairfax Avenue after the Los Angeles Police Department wouldn't let them cross into Hollywood.

"As long as we keep people from going into Hollywood," a friendly police officer told a young guy wearing a white T-shirt, "and keep them in West Hollywood, then they (the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department) have to deal with it."

Another protester heading east on Santa Monica Boulevard.

The protesters had come from Orange County and the San Fernando Valley and West Hollywood and Silver Lake and East L.A. and South Central. They were college students, college students who held full-time jobs, high school students, and people who had just moved to Los Angeles to get away from where they lived. They yelled things like "Yes We Can!" and "Gay or Straight! No on 8!" and "What Do We Want? Equal Rights! When Do We Want It? Now!"

The protesters then headed west on Sunset Boulevard, past all of the straight bars like the Saddleback Ranch and the Red Rock, and the patrons came out and clapped and cheered them on. Then they headed down San Vicente Boulevard, back to Santa Monica Boulevard where they had started.

Young guys talk just before the last rant on San Vicente Boulevard.

It was almost two o'clock in the morning, the crowd was down to 100 people or so, people were singing "Proud Mary" during karaoke night at the nearby Fiesta Cantina, and everyone looked tired and sat down in the middle of the intersection that has been the center of the Los Angeles gay rights movement for decades. The chants were getting more quiet, and, for the first time, the music from the bars was drowning out the calls for equality. A lean, young man, dressed in a gray sweat shirt and jeans with short, black hair, stood up.

"I had to deal with this shit in Michigan!" he yelled at anyone who would listen, and people took notice, heads immediately swinging in his direction.

"I didn't come here to eat shit! I came here to live my life and love my boyfriend and be free!"

The crowd cheered, and he sat down. It was the last, passionate rant of a long night in West Hollywood.

I appreciate the verbiage on the back of that guy's Tee -shirt in the last picture of the article.
It really keys me into
deep spiritual motivations of the anti-8 crowd. Any of those folks wonder why it was African-Americans who took
Prop -8 down? Who would know better than us what a true civil rights issue is?

Kirsten says:

Mark Zugman:
African Americans do not have a corner on civil rights... they belong to everyone... even if they aren't like you.

A civil right is an enforceable right or privilege, which if interfered with by another gives rise to an action for injury. Examples of civil rights are freedom of speech, press, assembly, the right to vote, freedom from involuntary servitude, and the right to equality in public places. Discrimination occurs when the civil rights of an individual are denied or interfered with because of their membership in a particular group or class. Statutes have been enacted to prevent discrimination based on a persons race, sex, religion, age, previous condition of servitude, physical limitation, national origin and sexual preference.

And though some of the gay and lesbian community is angry, most everyone at the event was very peaceful... Don't forget that the African American community also had angry and violent individuals who fought for civil rights... MLK wasn't the only face of the Civil Right Movement.

Also, the use of "spiritual motivations" in your statement completely negates the fact that religion should not be a part of the argument for oppressing a minority.

I was among the straight group that marched last night for equality... and I am ashamed that our state has proven to be so tyrannical toward a group that isn't hurting anyone.

Where was all this passion BEFORE the election? I think the biggest mistake made by the "gay activists" was holding rallies for those who already opposed Prop. 8. They were only preaching to the choir, rather than taking the message to people who NEEDED to hear it. This planned protest in front of the Mormon church is TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE by the gays. Pathetic.

Allen says:

Maybe the opposition to Prop. 8 should had engaged in more positive approaches to campaigning. Doing such acts like stealing people's yard signs (i.e. freedom of speech) and leaving hateful messages on people's vehicles who proudly displayed Yes on 8 stickers was probably not the most effective way of turning the hearts of the people to your cause. This has nothing to do with equality. I assume that homosexuals do not want to be called homosexuals, so why would you want your relationships to be called marriage? All the equality you were chasing already exists before the state court overturned the will of the people. The only hate that existed in the Prop.8 campaign was from the opposition to Prop. 8. Quit comparing yourselves to the groups of people who were really born a minority. It is a choice to be gay as it is a choice to straight. These are the consequences of your choices.

Steve says:

wow, are you misinformed or what? Being gay is not a choice. It IS how gay people are born. In fact, there are scientific studies that can correlate how a mother's homonal oddities while pregnant contribute to her child being gay. So get off the choice thing, you're clearly ignorant of actual facts. Its no more a choice than being black, or blonde, or tall or short.

DON'T DISCRIMINATE!

By the way, would you accept someone else telling you who you can and can't marry? Didn't think so...

If you don't like gay people marrying, then marry someone of the opposite sex and chill out.

Quincy says:

Undocumented aliens can marry in the United States. Thus, illegal aliens have more rights than Americans. I guess Jamiel Shaw Jr./SP40 supporters are happy..
Also, the fact that a specific group of Americans can't participate in an American institution shows that their home is the new reolcation camp. The Homosexual American is the new interment camp resident. "Tag, your it."

I voted No on Prop 8 but I must say that when I saw the Vote No on Prop 8 people at my polling place on election day, it was a HUGE TURN OFF for me. There is a reason that it is against the law. Love, respect and understanding is needed now.

Idiots.

I can't help but being pissed and aggraveted to no end by the people who show up at these types of events (gay rights parades included). The people who votes YES on this proposition wanted to make a point to the gay community that "you've chosen to be different and lead a perverted lifestyle. Don't expect us to support it or to consider you "like us.' " What the gay community needs to be doing is showing that they ARE like us...they they didn't choose to be thios way but since they are, they are going to make the most of it and be productive , tax-paying members of society who in turn derserve the same rights and privileges that the "straights" get. And in the process, show that they are loving, compassionate people and not the arrogant freaks that the conservatives make them out to be.

What they need are couples like Ellen and Portia leading the charge for eqality and compassion. Parents and grandparents there to support their children and grandchildren. same sex couples with their children all looking like the happy well-adjusted families that they are (and my wife and I know many of them). What do they provide...drag queens, Village People rejects and jackasses dressed up like TinkerBell jumping up on police cars with bullhorns, knowing full well that THEY are going to be on all the news stations representing their cause. And in turn, all of the YES backers will be watching this twit and saying "told you so."

USE YOUR HEADS, PEOPLE!

Patrick,
Good question, "what turned me off about the Prop 8 NO people showing up at my polling place in West Hollywood on Election day"? There must be respect for the election process and the law. There must also be respect for everyone's voice to be heard. That is why we vote, protest and strike. It is too late on Election day to get your message out, sorry. This election for me was really about the President. If you respect and accept the votes for Obama, then you must respect the votes for all issues on the ballot . It's great to be passionate about what you believe in but if you cross the line, (with any issue) it becomes something else. This will be a long hard fight but it must be done with Love and passion and not hate and force. PEACE TO ALL

all people have civil rights. If I have it as a woman and marreid. everyone should have it.

for our civilization to not provide we would be sitting judgment on one group and that is not right.

I am also against any church that speaks out against gays. They should not have their taxes as a church while be a political voice.

Who can I write to and where to voice this to my goverment?

Lyle Palaski says:

People like to say that being gay is a choice because then it is easier to dismiss them. And the convoluted logic they come up with to apply that to their own situations--oh, I choose to be straight--as though they were really choosing it, not following the inclinations they were born with. And have you noticed that all of the gay marriage fears are mostly about the men marrying. Women marrying doesn't seem to bother them so much.

And, of course, bring up other points of illogicality like gay men marrying lesbians or if they would rather gay men marry their daughters. No one seems to care that law abiding and loving gay citizens aren't allowed to marry, but convicted serial killers like the Hillside strangler, Richard Ramirez, or the Menendez brothers who murdered their parents are allowed to marry in prison, because if they were not it is considered cruel and unusual punishment.

And did Yes on 8 voters think we would all go back in the closet if our rights were taken away? Did they think we wouldn't display how much hurt they've bestowed on people from their own irrational fears? Do they not even know that we live in a constitutional democracy that actually protects the rights of the few over the tyranny of the masses? When the California Supreme Court overturns this proposition they will.

Do black people know that Bayard Rustin was Martin Luther King's associate, advisor, and personal secretary and the architect of much of what he accomplished including the famous March on Washington--and that he was gay?
