He shoots, He scores: Why I love the Los Angeles Kings

Warning: This week, I'm talking all about the Los Angeles Kings. Even though we've had a team here since 1968, the First Rule of Being a Sports Fan In Los Angeles dictates that relatively few people follow the Kings or care about the game, because the Kings have struggled - not "The Clippers" struggled, but still struggled - for much of their existence. I understand that there is another team, somewhere near Anaheim. Because I am a Los Angeles Kings fan, this team does not exist for me, and I will not speak of it again.

PRO TIP: Get into the Kings now, because they're about one season away from being a great team that can seriously compete in the playoffs. All your friends will think you're ahead of the curve and you can charge them for hockey insights!

I've been in love with ice hockey since I went to my very first Kings game, at the Forum, during the magnificent purple and gold era in the early '80s. I was 13, and all I remember about that game was how bad the Kings played, how awesome the fights were, and how much I wished I'd discovered the sport earlier.

One year later, Star Trek made it possible for me to be a rabid hockey fan for the rest of my teens. I bought my first pair of season tickets in the 1987-88 season, and kept them until 1992-93. When I was a teenager and traveled to a different city almost almost every weekend to attend Star Trek conventions, I made a special effort to go to cities with NHL franchises, so I could see what it was like to watch hockey where the fans were as passionate as the buildings were old. Boston, New Jersey, Montreal, Calgary, even Hartford all provided memorable experiences, and I got to see some truly outstanding games over the years.

Time flows differently when you're a teenager than it does at any other time in your life. As your self-awareness and identity develop, months and years feel longer and mundane events more significant than they do after you hit your 30s. (Well, at least if your name is Wil and you're writing this column.) So after two years of serious hockey mania, including watching as many games as I could on television, and mail ordering video tapes of out of market games, I started playing as a goalie when I was 15. For the next four years, I played in several house leagues around L.A., until I took a slapshot to the skull and was forced into early retirement at age 20.

At the height of my obsession, I was playing three or four times a week, and loving every second of it. One of the highlights of my life remains going to the Hockey Hall of Fame when I was 17, and somehow lucking into a private tour, including a stop behind the scenes where they kept items that they hadn't put on public display, yet. Because that wasn't awesome enough already, they let me see legendary Montreal goalie Ken Dryden's leg pads, which I got to actually put on and wear for a few glorious, magical moments that to this day I am convinced made me a better player.

I introduced my son Nolan to hockey during the playoffs two seasons ago, when he was 15. The Versus network had just picked up NHL games in HD, and we watched almost every game together (SECOND PRO TIP: If you're going to introduce anyone to a new sport, do it during that sport's playoffs. If it's the NHL, you get the bonus of showing them nearly all of the teams.) Last month, thanks to a post-holiday ticket sale, I took him to three games, where we watched the Kings play some of the most listless, uninspired, terrible hockey I've seen in over 20 years, but it didn't matter, because we went together. Saturday night, Nolan decided to list the various ways I've influenced his life, and one of the things at the top of the list was introducing him to hockey, which he loves. I choked back tears when he said that, because watching games together not only keeps the bond to my youth alive, but it strengthens the bond between us.

So if my adoration of hockey and the Kings seems well out of proportion to the NHL's influence in Los Angeles and the Kings' on-ice performance year after year, it's because hockey - and Kings hockey, in particular - is a lot more than just a game to me; it's a direct connection to a time in my life when I was coming of age and the world was about The Exciting Mysterious Future instead of The Terrifyingly Uncertain Present.

I will never forgive the Kings for taking Wayne Gretzky out of Canada, but I respect your love of the sport and the meaning it holds. It's nothing personal, I have the same contempt for Le Avalanche, alors, c'est dommage.

Wil, do you have the same types of connections with your other son (Ryan isn't it?)? I would assume so, you just rarely write about him.

Hockey is the greatest game! And I will forgive you, Wil, for being a Kings fan. Your Kings have beaten up on my Blues all season but we're still only separated by one point. It's a battle in the basement and one more game in late March. I'll be watching!

I finally gave up my season seats about 2 years ago. I just couldn't take having my heart broken over and over again. I will always be a Kings fan. But there's only so much a person can take.

As far as that "one season away" comment, well....I hope your right. Can't say I really believe it though.

"Wil, do you have the same types of connections with your other son (Ryan isn't it?)? I would assume so, you just rarely write about him."

Absolutely, Blake. Ryan is away at his second year of college, so I haven't been able to spend as much time with him lately as I have with Nolan.

I know there are parents who overtly and covertly choose favorites with their children, but I am definitely not one of them.

Blake says:

It's refreshing to see a "celebrity" relationship that lasts longer than 5 minutes, that doesn't include divorce, doesn't include fighting over the children, seeing actual morals presented to the fledgling geeks that you've raised. Just ... refreshing is the best word I can use.

Also, since you introduced Button Men, I've been trying to find a decent beginners tutorial on how to play, not the complicated "User Manual" that's floating all over the net. Any suggestions?

P.S. LOVE SUNKEN TREASURE!

Excellent post, Wil. Hockey is the cruelest sport to its fans. Ask any Whalers or Jets fan. And they moved my beloved North Stars to ... oh my *god* ... Dallas? DALLAS?

If you think it's bad for North Stars fans, imagine how they feel up in Winnipeg!

Just wanted to drop a note and say nice piece on the Kings and pro hockey -- which I gladly discovered 14 years after transplanting to L.A. I agree they're gonna be good -- Jack Johnson is a monster when he's on -- and it will be interesting to see if the team finds a way to make tickets more affordable and market the hockey and not all the other stupid crap they do to try to get fans excited at games.

Great article. Hockey is a real passionate sport and you portrayed it in the right light. Terry Murray and the boys have done a great job this year plus they were really good guys at their fund raiser this past weekend. Staples Center doesn’t have the atmosphere like “The Garage” but with their solid effort they are a fun team to watch this year!

Forum to Staples Girl says:

Wil, as a fellow heartbroken Kings fan, thanks! I try to explain my decades long devotion but the closest I come is to say it's like being a Cubs fan. "There's always next season..." And we all miss the triple crown line.

Was this a spontaneous thing, or maybe part of a school project or something. Because, wow dude, just having a teenager who realizes something like that is a blessing in this day and age. You and Ann have done a wonderful job.

Brent says:

Wil, you live in Pasadena, everyone who's been to LA knows that Anaheim might as well be in another state, that's gotta be a 2 hour drive for you on an average day, 3 and may be 4 on the worst of days. That's like people thinking that someone from Dallas, TX should root for the Spurs whenever the Mavs lose (sorry, I'm from San Antonio, I'm sure there's other applicable sports team distance-city relations).

Seriously though for anyone not from LA do a google maps directions search from LA to Anaheim and look at the time it takes in traffic, because that'll be the average time. Now look at where Pasadena is in relation to all this and you'll realize just how it's possible to never root for an Anaheim team if you're in Pasadena

brendoman says:

Awesome article Wil. I am ashamed to admit this, but I am just now getting into hockey. Growing up in San Diego, all we had was a minor league team. I went to a couple games but didn't really get into it. Kevin Smith started talking about hockey all the time on his board and podcast and NHL '09 as well so I went and bought it and now I'm hooked. A couple of my friends are taking me to my first Kings game soon, hopefully.

Brent, totally agree with you on the L.A/OC thing. Folks from out of town always assume they are so close. I live just north of Anaheim, near Buena Park, and people always assume I go up to L.A. all the time, which couldn't be further from the truth. I always laugh when my friends come from out of town and stay in L.A. somewhere and assume they can get to Disneyland in 20 minutes.

William Noetling says:

Dude, that other team about 45 minutes south of Los Angeles? Yeah, contraction would be good for them. They shouldn't even EXIST, and and galls me that they won the championship before our beloved Kings.

Leiweike should step down in disgrace, and AEG should sell the team to someone who WANTS a winner.

Posted On: Tuesday, Feb. 24 2009 @ 7:47PM
Scott Bowen says:

Well I know how you feel.

Try being a Vancouver Canucks fan, ack, year after year of failing and I still watch every game. But at least tickets are affordable in the states.

I can only hope my daughter will enjoy hockey with me when she is older. Your a lucky man (Other than being a kings fan).

Wil, come up to Calgary any time and I'll take you out to a game, buy you a Guinness and talk about nerdy things all night. My treat!

Grapes says:

Dude...Frolov and Kopitar do not a team make. Kings need a top goalie bad. But hey, at least you get to see the top stars from other teams when they play the Kings, neh? Keep the Faith.
