Rosh Hashanah Catering: A Guide to Timely Ordering
While your internal clock may run on Jewish Standard Time, measuring by approximations instead of absolutes, restaurants don't. Making coconut macaroons and briskets for hundreds takes anywhere from hours to days of careful planning. So even though Rosh Hashanah is about a week away, it's important to get your holiday catering orders in soon. To make things easier, we've compiled a short list of restaurants offering special Rosh Hashanah catering menus, with their ordering deadlines. Read it over, and tell the mishpocha: you have to get your holiday orders in on time, if not earlier.

FOOD's baker Amanda Broader has taken the traditional holiday pairing of apples and honey to a higher level. This year, the bakery-cafe offers honey almond apple cake, in both full and individual sizes, traditional honey cake, and caramel panna cotta with caramelized lady apples on their Rosh Hashanah catering menu. Orders will be accepted by phone, and in the shop until 5 p.m. on Monday, September 14.
Monday, September 14, is also the last day to place your Rosh Hashanah catering order at Joan's on Third. From matzo ball soup to oven roasted beef tenderloin with horseradish, noodle kugel to golden beet and apple salad with walnuts and goat cheese, the kosher catering menu covers all the holiday bases -- and then some.
In preparation for the upcoming New Year, Chef Jamie Cantor of Platine Cookies has been rolling out sheets of rich cream cheese dough for rugelah, Platine's cookie of the month. Filled with apricot jam, walnuts, and Zante currants, then topped with a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar, the cookies will no doubt ensure a sweet New Year. Order online, the bakery will be closed until the Tuesday, September 15.
Chef Akasha Richmond's Rosh Hashanah menu features flavors from both the new and the old school (or shul) Jewish family cookbook: organic chopped liver, Niman Ranch brisket, chicken with quince, prunes and apricots; and couscous with chickpeas, pumpkin, almonds and pomegranate. AKASHA will be accepting catering orders until Wednesday, September 16.
Though again, this is only a short list, 48 hours notice is a good rule of thumb when considering most catering options.
