Black Wednesday at the Santa Monica Farmers Market: Come Early, Bring Your Pith Helmet

Santa Monica Farmers Market
This Friday may be Black Friday and the start of the Christmas shopping season, but tomorrow is the biggest shopping day of the year at the Wednesday Santa Monica farmers market. To accommodate the crowds shopping for Thanksgiving dinner, the market will open when the vendors are set up, "as soon after 7 a.m. as they're able," says market manager Laura Avery. And it will shut down promptly at 1:30 p.m.

This year the Culinary Arts Program of the Los Angeles Art Institute will be selling pumpkin pies and cranberry dressing, an annual market tradition. Avery also warns that Santa Monica is still under the medfly quarantine, so "there will be netting on tables selling fruit, eggplant, tomatoes and peppers. The fruit is not affected, but the netting is to keep it safe from any flies that happen to be in the area." Think of it aesthetically, like a mosquito netting in a Malcolm Lowry novel. Wear your pith helmet.

Wednesday Santa Monica Farmers Market: between Arizona Ave. & 2nd St., Santa Monica.
