Grace Update: An Anniversary Menu + Doughnut Classes

Grace, Neal and Amy Knoll Fraser's Beverly Boulevard restaurant, has neither closed nor yet relocated to it's future home downtown in St. Vibiana's rectory. All that in good time. Right now they're not only open, but celebrating their 7-year anniversary. A special "7 Year Itch" menu begins next Tuesday, March 16th, and will run for seven weeks, through the week of May 7th. Three menus -- a 3 course, a 5 course, and a chef's menu--will spotlight dishes that have become classics during Grace's seven year run. Like what? Dungeness crab salad; pumpkin, sea urchin and shrimp risotto; bacon-wrapped saddle of rabbit with Anson Mills polenta; chocolate soufflé cake affogato. And if you can't find your favorite Grace classic on any of the menus, just ask.
Yes, the justly famous salted caramel doughnuts will be on the menu. Speaking of doughnuts, pastry chef Mariah Swan will be giving 3 Saturday doughnut-making workshops in April. Each 3-hour class is $75, or you can buy the series for $200. The class is limited to 10 people, so call the restaurant if you're interested.
While Neal Fraser is busy making wild Burgundy snails and braised short ribs, and Swan is teaching people how to Create Your Own Doughnut (April 24th), the restaurant engines are working. The Frasers are raising the $2 1/2 million that is going into the downtown location. The current Grace will stay open until escrow closes on that property, which has no immediate timetable. Plans for a second BLD, on the corner of Raymond and Holly in Old Town Pasadena, are on hold. "Everything's up in the air," said Knoll Fraser recently. Meanwhile, it's a great time to celebrate. Eat some escargot, make a doughnut.
