Carne Asada Sundays Will Continue at Dodger Stadium, Even Without Nomar

Nomar Garciaparra serves himself a plate of food at Carne Asada Sunday
Nomar Garciaparra, the 6 time All-Star infielder who spent much of his 14-year career with the Red Sox and a few memorable years with the Dodgers, retired Wednesday. During his three years wearing Dodger blue, Garciaparra accomplished many things, but our favorite was his institution of Carne Asada Sundays at Chavez Ravine.

Garciappara would personally serve up plates of tacos for the fans, often bringing his family, including his father Ramon, who had a hand in the recipe. The infielder grew up in Whittier, and he picked carne asada as his cause of choice because it reminded him of home. During his years in Boston, not a city famous for its Mexican cuisine, his mother would actually bring him the dish when she came to visit him. (Here's the recipe.)

So what's on deck, so to speak, now that Nomar's going to be in the ESPN broadcast booth instead of on the field? Dodgers representatives say that Carne Asada Sunday will continue, twice a season, with Andre Ethier and Fernando Valenzuela taking turns hosting the event. (Ethier and Valenzuela each hosted one this past year, after Garciaparra left to play in Oakland.) Dates for the events have not yet been announced. The choice of Ethier to host the event makes sense, as he has his own food blog, Dining with 'Dre, although he hasn't been posting much since the birth of his son. As for Fernando, well, he can still sling anything better than most of us.
