Airplane Happy Meals: Cocaine Hidden in In-Flight Food

Airplane food has always needed a little something to make it edible, even when it was free. Your average person might pack a sandwich and maybe drink a few more of those tiny bottles of gin to make it all palatable. Now Dutch police have detained 20 people for smuggling cocaine in those in-flight meals. Guess it doesn't matter if the food is any good when you have a pound of coke in your Happy Meal.

"Twenty suspects have been arrested over the last four months in the Netherlands and Bonaire," an island territory of the Netherlands Antilles, Schiphol airport spokesman Robert van Kapel said. The coke was being smuggled on planes flying between the Dutch Antilles and the Netherlands. A dozen of the twenty suspects are Dutch nationals; eleven worked for a Schiphol-based company catering for airlines. Police seized more than 50 kilograms, or 110 pounds, of cocaine, with a street value of €2 million. Note to airlines: at least some airplane food is worth paying for.
