Food For Ammo: Fast Food Cut From U.S. Bases In Afghanistan

The fight in Afghanistan just got a lot less processed. According to Command Sargent Major Michael T. Hall's blog (yes, he has a blog), "In the coming weeks and months, concessions such as Orange Julius, Burger King, Pizza Hut, Dairy Queen and Military Car Sales will close their doors."

The decision though, is not one of health and the improvement of mind-body efficiency for the soldiers in Afghanistan, but rather, of resource allocation. The goal is to cut back on nonessential expenditures, which include the import of canned and bottled goods, making it easier to supply the actual combat outposts with the ammunition, food and water that they require. Or to quote Command Sgt. Maj. Hall, "This is a warzone - not an amusement park."

It is good news for locavores though, as the bases will retain the Afghan-employed bazaars and other business. Plus, we here at Squid Ink think that local delicacies like mantu taste a whole lot better than whatever the hell a P'ZoneĀ® is anyway.
