One Step Closer to Smell-o-vision: North Carolina Billboard Smells Like BBQ

You're watching your favorite food TV show when the chef looks down at his mouth-watering creation and announces, "Wow, I sure wish you could smell this! The aroma in here is just incredible." Instead of being bitter that you can't smell Bobby Flay's cumin-crusted steak or Guy Fieri's chili-rubbed rib eye, just head down to North Carolina where they're one step closer to smell-o-vision. Drivers on a central North Carolina highway are stopping in their tracks -- hopefully without causing accidents -- to see a certain beef billboard for the Southern-based Food Lion grocery chain. Not only does it look appetizing, it also smells like black pepper and charcoal.

Just how does the billboard work? The Associated Press reports that a high-powered fan located at the bottom of the billboard spreads black pepper and charcoal aromas by blowing air over cartridges loaded with fragrance oils. In case you happen to be in the area before June 18, make a point to drive by between 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., when the billboard will be emitting the scents. Where is it? On highway N.C. 160. Just look for a billboard that shows a fork piercing a piece of meat. If you can't see it, you can smell it.
