Municipal Winemakers: Bike Your Way To Free Wine Delivery, Or Just Join Club Awesome
Before you commit to a lifetime of padded bike shorts after watching Alberto Contador win the Tour de France on Sunday, we suggest you start with a leisurely ride to Municipal Winemakers' Santa Barbara tasting room (only 100 miles, versus this year's 2,263 mile Tour de France course).
Municipal Winemakers Will Bike For Wine
Plus, there is a prize. It may not be the hundreds of thousands of euros Contador is depositing into his bank account today, but owner/winemaker Dave Potter is promising free delivery on his wines when you bike to the winery. The deal wasn't intended for 100-mile L.A. to Santa Barbara commutes, but Potter confirmed with Squid Ink that he's willing to deliver to L.A. free of charge should you be inclined to spend you weekend on the 101. "The least I could do is give them free delivery.... [but] I don't know if I can promise that I will deliver it on a bike." He'll even toss in more of that wine industry sarcasm free of charge.
Potter, who is also a winemaker for Fess Parker and Epiphany Cellars, opened the tasting room earlier this year on Santa Barbara's urban wine trail. Current releases include the 2009 Bright White (dry Riesling), 2007 Best Barrel Cabernet, and 2008 Bright Red, a Cotes du Rhone-inspired Grenache-Cinsault-Syrah blend (the Syrah grapes add "purpleness," according to Potter).
Municipal Winemakers Club Awesome Member Hairy
If cycling really isn't your thing, you can always join Club Awesome, Potter's version of an exclusive wine club. Here, according to the Municipal website, you "get to be known as awesome," as does your mug shot, which will be posted on the winery's Facebook page should you so desire. You'll also be billed around $45 for two bottles every quarter (including shipping), a pretty awesome deal for small batch wines.
Municipal Winemakers Tasting Room, 28 Anacapa Street (suite D, in back). Open Thursday through Monday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., but Potter says "The tasting room hours are constantly evolving," so you may want to call to check on operating hours before making the bike or drive.
