It's Pour-Your-Own At The Pacific Gravity Party
When you've got a backyard full of rosy-cheeked, jolly sorts sporting beer t-shirts, dozens of Igloos converted into jockey boxes, a shave ice machine featuring margarita and coconut-flavored mead (honey wine), and puns flying through the air at an alarming rate, it can only mean one thing. It's the Pacific Gravity Homebrew Club's annual member party, held on Saturday in a member's Pacific Palisades backyard.

This year was particularly festive, as the home brewers were celebrating the 15th anniversary of their Culver City-based club (meetings are held at Culver City Homebrewing Supply). According to vice president Dan Hakes (that's his impressive wood jockey in the photo above), the club's membership is nearing 400. Or at least right around party time, when the $30 membership gets you discounts on home brewing supplies, access to meetings and homebrewing sessions, and most pressing for many, a ticket to the annual bash, where members mingle among the homemade beer, mead and sodas. That it's held on the lawn of a swanky, celebrity-lined Almalfi Drive home, and you can hear the band rocking out and taste the homebrew in the air for blocks, is an oddly satisfying bonus. "This is the time of year when we're at our peak, that's for sure," says Hakes.

Judging by the impressive number of twenty and thirty-something imbibers at Saturday's party (yes, the tourist t-shirt and tube sock sorts are still here, but so are an increasing number of heavily tattooed sorts), it looks like the club has a lot more party years ahead -- something that we're sure the neighbors will be thrilled to hear.
