Use Your Noodle Part Two: Chinese Director Zhang Yimou's A Woman, A Gun and A Noodle Shop

Categories: Food in Movies

In June, we wrote of the dazzling food prep scene in Chinese director Zhang Yimou's A Woman, A Gun and A Noodle Shop (a re-make of the Coen Brothers' Blood Simple which will be released on September 3rd). In it, Li, a chef with a fondness for bare midriff tops, pink satin and the wife of his grouchy boss Wang, whips together a batch of noodles when some famished police show up at a restaurant located in the middle of nowhere in the North China desert. Director Zhang may or may not know about kitchens, but his experience as the creative force behind the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics allowed him to turn a potentially throwaway moment into a brief bit that combines physical dexterity, whirring sound effects and rhythmic gymnastics and still makes you hungry.
