September Chile Roasts at the Santa Monica Farmers Market

It's the season of chile roasts, even if you don't live in New Mexico, and if you didn't make it to any of the Hatch chile roasts at Bristol Farms, you can head on over to the Santa Monica farmers market, where they're having chile roasts every Saturday for the month of September at the Cloverfield Saturday market. Chile roasts will start at 9 a.m. and go until the chiles, which will sell for $2 a pound, are gone.

The chiles go into the huge roaster that Santa Monica farmers market manager Laura Avery brought back from Santa Fe a few years ago, and two or three batches are generally roasted each Saturday. This weekend they'll be roasting pasillas from Tutti Frutti Farms, Anaheims from Smith Farms and jalapeƱos from Valdivia Farms. Which chiles are roasted each week can vary depending on what's available, but farmers market coordinator Darra Henigan says that later on in the month they'll be roasting Trevino Farms' chiles de augua, hot chiles originally from Oaxaca. Roasted chiles freeze very well, so if you pick up more than you need, just toss them into the freezer.
