Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution + the LAUSD: An Open Letter to Parents

157979_111595705573504_7302964_n.jpg
It's now Day 4 of Jamie Oliver's Los Angeles Food Revolution and the British chef staged a rally of sorts yesterday at his Westwood headquarters, Jamie's Kitchen, in order to garner support for his efforts to get into Los Angeles public school kitchens. Oliver has been repeatedly denied access by the LAUSD. Oliver has called the second season of his ABC reality show a "documentary," which is exactly what it may become at this rate: Jamie Oliver and the LAUSD. Will Oliver talk his way into Los Angeles schools? Will our children learn better eating habits before the show wraps? Will Oliver's mobile kitchen challenge Kogi BBQ as the city's favorite food truck? Stay tuned.

In the meantime, Oliver has posted his open letter to Los Angeles parents on his Facebook page. The letter is a call to action, and asks parents to write to LAUSD board members (names, districts and email addresses provided) in the next 24 hours to ask that they allow the chef access to the schools. Turn the page for the letter and check the Facebook page for the addresses. And, if you like, weigh in below in the comments section with your take on this situation. Should the LAUSD let Oliver into the schools? Are there good reasons why they wouldn't? Should Oliver consider charter schools instead? Will the show work if he can't get in? At this point, there are a lot more questions than answers. But hey, I guess we can just wait for the documentary.

Dear Parents,

Thank you for coming today. I need your support. Please write to the LAUSD board members (addresses below) to grant me access into the schools to see the food being fed to your children. Please try to do this in the next 24 hours.

I'm never going to get this done without you.

Please CC jamieskitchenla@live.com on these emails so I can track the great work you are doing.

Please make the subject of your e-mail "Let Jamie Oliver into LAUSD".

Please pass this on to your friends and family and show your support on our Facebook page - "Food Revolution Los Angeles". Your effort will make a difference.

Big Love,

Jamie Oliver

After reading the comments on this blog, it is more than apparent that American's attitudes are the problem. It's obvious from this small sample of comments that there are far too many people in our society that do not truly care about the health of American children. It is disgraceful seeing the amount of obesity in this country, and the lackluster education is obviously a root cause. Let's be honest, we're ranked among the lowest of developed nations for educational standards and results. American arrogance, stupidity, and egotism will be the downfall of our children, as you enable the gluttonous behavior of our children (learned from their parents) by looking the other way and calling for Mr. Oliver to return to "his country". We should be taking any help we can get, but it seems the egotism and ignorance of American parents will seal the fate of far too many of this nation's children. Maybe charging parents with obese children with neglect would be a better approach? God only know's, we sure as hell can't educate these people.

Our neighborhood public elementary school tried several years ago, with the guidance of professional dietician parents, to approach LAUSD about changing the food served. They were completely stonewalled - the district was having no part of it. This is definitely worth Jamie Oliver's attention and ours, regardless of where he locates his kitchen.

I think calling attention to the problem is a great way to get people to notice and start taking this seriously. I don't care who says it or where he's from, kids need to eat better. The squaky wheel gets the oil so I am not opposed to the cameras.

I also don't appreciate a personality coming in from the outside and trying to tell us what to do. Then there's his extreme naïveté in thinking a bureaucracy will "grant me access into the schools to see the food being fed to your children." How about if we write Jamie demanding access to his operation so that we can judge how he stands to profit from sticking his nose into other people's business?

Yes LAUSD needs help but real help not a reality show. I completely understand why they don't want a reality show involved. If Jamie Oliver really wanted to help, he could do it without cameras. What LAUSD needs is real funding across the board.

Jamie Oliver is just out looking for publicity there are plenty of places in the US worse off than LA. Making a reality show out of our kids is not the way to make changes. http://foodiegossip.blogspot.c...

It’s interesting that Jamie Oliver would locate his "community kitchen" in tony Westwood where people are more prone to eat healthy as opposed to the eastside, south central or Pacoima. If he really wanted to start a revolution maybe he should look at communities where fresh food is sparse and disenfranchised communities are forced to eat fast food by necessity because it’s cheap and quick

right on! All that money spent on the facility, wouldn't it have been great if they had built a facility that could be used for real after this road show moves on..... I like him and appreciate his intent but jeez louise, he really needs to stop talking to television producers...

Tell Mr. Jamie that we Americans don't need his type and go back to his own country. They're all obese in the UK and have no clue what healthy food is, unless you include haggis. Now there's a helthy, tasty dish. Focus more on your country's dentistry Jamie.

Spoken by no doubt an uneducated and obese American. Afterall, the odds are pretty high. Education nor health are America's strong points.
