Food Truck Friday: Singaporean Street Food at the Street Hawker Truck

Street Hawker Truck: Singapore Fried Bee Hoon

The Street Hawker Truck (@streethawkert) isn't much to look at. It doesn't roll out very often. And whoever runs the Twitter feed occasionally seems more interested in using it as a dating service than in telling customers the truck's location. Street Hawker does, however, serve a decent, albeit greasy, bee hoon.

Street Hawker Truck: Exterior

Angelenos have plenty of options for Asian and Southeast Asian fare, but not many for specifically Singaporean food. (Jonathan Gold kinda sorta recommends Xino on the Dining Deck at the revamped Santa Monica Place.) The street fare from Street Hawker, more a van than a truck, runs the gamut from salty fried rice and satay skewers to roti and Hainanese chicken, but we like the bee hoon.

For $8.75, we got a styorofoam container groaning under a mass of noodles, green onions, scrambled egg, bean sprouts, sweet sausage and even a couple of shrimp. Everything was fried fresh, and tossed in a moderately spicy, salty-sweet peanut and chilli sauce. Though the noodles seemed like the pre-packaged supermarket variety and the plastic bag was dripping with a greasy orange sauce, these were the kind of satisfying, stick-to-your-ribs, can't-stop-eating them noodles we dig. Plus, one order is probably big enough for two people.

"greasy orange sauce"? "pre-packaged supermarket noodles"? I'm so there.

The food doesn't look that good. I would love to find some good Singaporean food. One of the best food cities in the world and it is really hard to find in LA.

The funny thing about Singapore is that even the food court in the crummiest shopping center has amazing food. I once asked a local why every place was so good. His reply was that people in Singapore won't tolerate bad food.

I agree completely. Street Hawker recently changed up their roti with yellow curry to a powerful red, and it's stout and hearty. He may need some help with his repetitive and often gramatically-incorrect tweets, but I'm willing to overlook that as the food is outstanding.
