Actually the regional chef awards are what the food world pays the most attention to. Winning Outstanding Chef or Outstanding Restaurant is a formidable accomplishment, but it is more or less a lifetime achievement award. (Still: Go Suzanne!)

In Best Chef: Pacific, L.A. is really well-represented in the long-list this year.

Too many awards, not enough (feather-light) gnocchi or (properly weighted) meatloaf or (Bohemian-style) duck and goose. Outlaw fusion, except when designing nuclear devices.

That's hilarious. Can you imagine if they had an actual spelling bee? Spell pâté en croûte. Pouilly-Fuisse. Prosciutto. Huitlacoche.

Regional chef wins are like.. winning your school's spelling bee: joyous but mostly moot.
