Street Food Mondays Brings Antojitos de mi Abuelita to Angeli Caffe

The first time we met Street Gourmet LA blogger Bill Esparza, we were about to dig into one of Antojito de mi Abuelita's bright red, guajillo chile-dipped pambazos with its guts of chorizo, potatoes, shredded lettuce and crumbled cheese nearly spilling out. "Are you shy about germs?" we asked. "If not, we can totally share."

"Shy about germs?" he said. "I'd lick a drunken hobo's dirty spoon." As we sat on a curb tearing into the sandwich, a friendship was born.

We're happy to report that next Monday, February 28, the consummate taco hound and Rick Bayless gadfly will revive his Street Food Mondays series, bringing a three-course Mexico City-style "comida corrida" from the North Hollywood taco truck to Angeli Caffe.

In the summer of 2010, Esparza joined forces with chef and Good Food host Evan Kleiman to create a monthly pop-up showcasing street vendors like Ricky's Fish Tacos and the Sri Lankan fare of Priyani Dissanayake whose Priyani Café had recently closed.

This time around, Antojitos de mi Abuelita will offer a $28, three-course, prix fixe meal featuring Mexico City-style lentil soup, rice with vegetables and your choice of guisado (stew): Pueblan green mole, pork ribs in guajillo chile, pork ribs in spicy tomatillo, frog's legs torts or Aztec spinach huazontle in black Oaxacan mole. Complimentary aguas frescas like horchata and jamaica are included in the price of the meal, as is the dessert of arroz con leche.
