Flatiron Truck Brings "Farm-to-Street" Food to L.A.

You can't exactly serve farm-to-table food when there's no table involved, so the new Flatiron Truck, which joined the masses of L.A. food trucks on March 5th, has dubbed their cuisine "farm-to-street."

The latest endeavor from Chef Timothy Mark Abell, who's worked at Hungry Cat, Joe's, Water Grill and Wilshire, the Flatiron Truck uses a rotating menu based on what's fresh from the farmer's market.

Specials change daily -- some they've featured so far include roasted asparagus, wild boar bacon and local duck eggs -- but there are permanent menu items as well including Tuna Collar on Toast, the Pork Burger with bacon tomato jam, the Flatiron Steak with roasted crispy potatoes, and the Farmer's Market Salad, which incorporates local farmer's market greens, sustainable seafood and fresh meats. We're most intrigued by the Donut Holes with spiced crème fraiche.

Dishes run between $3-$12, and Abell credits his ability to keep those prices low to the relationships he's developed with local farmers. (Not sure if he's roping the $12 items into that group of cheap eats, but we'll go with it.)

As for specials up this week, look for grilled chorizo with peas and carrots, oxtail "Banh Mi," challah French toast with maple bacon butter and for St. Patrick's Day, corned beef, cabbage and hash "burrito."

While the Flatiron Truck may be getting good press, they need to improve their business - dramatically. We contracted them to cater our wedding, and extensively communicated with them for 6 months up to the date. 3 hours before the ceremony, they hadn't shown up. I reached them by phone, only to learn they DOUBLE-BOOKED WEDDINGS.

They left us without food, and we scrambled to make alternate arrangements - FOR OUR WEDDING. The bride couldn't even find time to get dressed, hair and makeup, and the entire pre-period before the wedding was ruined. They were apologetic, and sent friends and family to help serve our replacement food, but refused to make up for the debacle besides offering us a later catered lunch. We didn't NEED a catered lunch. We needed wedding food, and our day was changed irreparably and permanently. Meanwhile, the Flatiron truck drove off on its merry way, having earned a paycheck that day. Not fair and unprofessional.

OK. Got my free lunch. Very tasty Pork burger. Washed it down with a Green Pomegranite Iced Tea from Commissary. They only bummer was that they were out of a Crawfish Cake (?) which sounded amazing.

I'm usually a food truck skeptic, but these guys put the food first. They didn't just come up with a name and stop there like many food trucks.

Commissary is becoming the hot spot for food trucks. I think they had 5 there last night. It is the best place for coffee in the WeHo / Fairfax area.

These guys owe me a free lunch. Whenever they go to Commissary Coffee, they ask me to move my car to park the track. They bribed me with free food.

Looks good, but where is my free lunch? Are you going to be at Commissary this weekend? Commissary is fantastic for coffee, BTW.

I like the idea of a menu that is based on the food that is available that day. Thanks
