If you're tired of trekking west for food truck convoys -- or dealing with the parking issues on Abbot Kinney -- this Friday's monthly SGV Food Truck Festival is your chance to eat standing up considerably east of the 405.
The SGV Food Truck Festival is brought to you not by event planners, but by food truckers themselves. It was started by the people who run Tapa Boy, a food truck serving Filipino breakfast food. Tapa Boy is no stranger to food festivals, having launched last September at that month's Abbot Kinney First Friday. The SGV Food Truck Festival, which started at the end of last year, is held at SpeedZone in the City of Industry (no idea? here's a map), from 6 - 11 p.m. Initially they had about a dozen trucks, said Mike Teodoro of Tapa Boy, but with crowds increasing -- up from about 12,000 initially to near 18,000 last month 1,200 to 1,800 last month -- Teodoro has upped the number of trucks, which are carefully curated, to 17 this month. "We're going from our own festival to the Santa Anita [on Saturday]," said Teodoro by phone yesterday. "It's gonna kill us." Proving that we all suffer for our art.
Trucks scheduled to participate in tomorrow's event: The Grilled Cheese Truck, Temaki Truck, Vesuvio, Papas Tapas, Onolicious Hawaiian BBQ, Frysmith, White Rabbit Truck, The Tasty Meat Truck, Longboards Ice Cream, Tapa Boy, Lobsta Truck, The Buttermilk Truck, Lee's Philly, Lomo Arigato, Ahn Joo and Tropical Shaved Ice.
There is a $6 entrance fee, $4 of which is playable credit within SpeedZone, which includes the arcade AND the racetracks. Children 5 and under are free. There is parking in front of the venue.
