Bigmista Hits TV in "Ultimate BBQ Showdown"

Bigmista's BBQ (Atwater Village Farmer's Market): Brisket, Hot Links, Ribs, Beans, Collard Greens

File this under "Local Boy Makes Good." Neil Strawder a.k.a. the big mister behind Bigmista's Barbecue is on his way back from Houston where he just finished shooting Ultimate Barbecue Showdown, a 1-hour special that will air on CBS over Memorial Day weekend.

The contest features Bigmista (who was recently voted, for the second year in a row, Best Barbecue by Los Angeles Hot List) competing against three of the best barbecue teams in the nation: William Bubba Latimer of Bub-Ba-Q, Tuffy Stone of Cool Smoke and Myron Mixon of Jack's Old South.

Strawder can't reveal what he cooked or how he placed, but he says he's happy with the results. As usual, Bigmista is back on the farmers market circuit, where he has already made plenty of fans at the local level.

Big Mista cooks the best BBQ in Southern California, IMHO, and it compares very well to the best of what I find on my regular trips through Texas and the South -- both beef and pork. I wish I didn't live so far from the farmer's markets of his moveable feast (see locations at: http://bigmista.com/vending/ ), but I go when I can. In addition to offering great food, I think Big Mista has been a competitive force that's helped raise the quality of Southern Cal BBQ. For example, Smoke City, a new place on Van Nuys in Sherman Oaks, has unexpectedly fine brisket (the fatty, not the lean, version) that I'm not ashamed to feed fellow Texans. Big Mista beats them hands up, down, and sideways overall, but the brisket is excellent, and, by the way, they're operating out of a nice little location. I wish Neil would set down roots in a similar joint but am grateful for what he and his family have been giving us for the last couple of years. -SB

Wouldn't it be great if the LA Weekly webmaster answered notes about a bug in the new commenting software (which won't post messages about 20% of the time) or if the editor responded when you wrote to say that the webmaster needs to answer his mail? When I win the Big Lottery and buy LA Weekly from Va Vroom Media, guess what my first executive action will be?

I hope to see Houston Barbecue Company on your special. They really deserve recognition. 1127 Eldridge Parkway, West Houston in the Energy Corridor.
