Pulitzer Prizes Announced: Jonathan Gold Almost Wins (Again)

No, Jonathan Gold has not won a second Pulitzer, but he's come pretty damn close. As the Weekly's editor Drex Heikes just emailed us all:

Jonathan Gold was one of the three finalists this year for the Pulitzer Prize for criticism, Columbia University just announced.

The prize went to Boston Globe art critic Sebastian Smee, which means Jonathan remains the only restaurant critic since the invention of the printing press to win a Pulitzer.

The other finalist in criticism was architecture critic Nicolai Ouroussoff of The New York Times. (Here's a complete list of this year's winners.) Congratulations, Jonathan. Hopefully TMZ is not waiting in the bushes near Mozza again.

JGold in close competition with art and architecture critics? Looks like rascal culture has permanently shut down the Pulitzers. (Not Gold's fault -- he's good.)

But does it really matter? Archibald MacLeish, one of America's greatest poets, won three Pulitzers (twice for poetry, once for drama) between 1933 and 1959. Lots of English teachers can't remember why he read Pound and T. S. Eliot or even who he was. Too many pickles on Pico, in my humble opinion, not enough white-clam pizza.
