What The President Ate For Dinner Last Night

Even if you're a Republican, you may secretly want to know what chef Suzanne Goin served President Obama -- and 60 other seriously rich people -- last night at Tavern. And although we do not care one bit what Justin Bieber and Rhianna and Lindsay Lohan and every other celebrity in this town eats or where they eat it, we kind of wanted to know too. It is the president, after all.

Caroline Styne, co-owner with Goin of the Brentwood restaurant (they also own AOC and Lucques) knows this, so she kindly sent out the menu. Turn the page for the specifics of the 5-course meal, along with Styne's letter about the event.

Many have asked us about our dinner last evening for President Obama at Tavern. It was an incredible and intense experience for Suzanne, me, and everyone that works with us. The planning, anticipation and execution of the evening was nerve-wracking and exciting beyond description. We and our entire staff are just so honored to have been entrusted with such an important evening.

All of the guests seemed to truly enjoy themselves and their time with the President. He was gracious and generous with his time, going beyond the donors at the dinner and taking time to shake the hand of every staff member at the restaurant. We couldn't be more pleased with the evening as a whole. Here's the menu everyone has been asking about.

I might be interested in the food if our president had been here on the business of the nation.

Instead, his primary purpose was to get Democrat fat-cats to hand over $35,800 each -- the legal limit. Presumably, he didn't insult workaday Americans (as he did with a similar fat-cat crowd in San Francisco in 2008) by complaining that people who disagree with him are "bitter" and "cling to guns or religion" for comfort -- i.e., are stupid and couldn't possibly have thoughtful reasons for disagreeing. As we sprint towards 2012, the president is visibly struggling not to mix bigotry with fundraising. It's bad for the cash, his handlers have told him, even worse for the vote.

Every sitting President holds these fund raising shin-digs during election season--hardly unique to Obama, and until we have true campaign finance reform, the cost of elections will be paid for by, in part, "the fat cats." As for "complaining that people who disagree with him are "bitter", that is NOT the point that Obama was trying to make, and it is a quote that is frequently propagandized out of context; Obama was attempting to explain why people in some of the most economically depressed areas in the country either vote against their self interest, or don't vote at all--his conclusion was that "the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not." He went on to explain, clumsily it is true, that it is the disenchantment with Government (both Dem and Repub) that explains why "they cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations." To deny that disillusioned people scape-goat is to deny the facts Isaiah. At any rate, Obama's vow to save Social Security/Medicare will do more to help "workaday Americans" than what the other side has on offer.
