Back on Top: Yamashiro Farmers Market Returns to Hollywood

When it opened last spring, the farmers market located at the sprawling property adjacent to Yamashiro restaurant in the Hollywood Hills gave the people what they want. Maybe they didn't know they wanted it, but anyone who made the brief trek up Sycamore Avenue was rewarded with some of the best things L.A. has to offer, all combined in one place. Thankfully, this market-and-then-some returns Thursday, April 7th from 5 to 9 p.m., following a roughly five-month hiatus.
Those unrivaled views (for a farmers' market, at least), access to an amazing site, opportunity to engage in public life, and outdoor wine and cocktails drinking will be yours again. Not to mention the chance to purchase fresh produce, baked goods, and other local consumables. But when it comes to the Thursday Yamashiro routine, the usual farmers market priorities become somewhat secondary. Few other events pack this much good stuff into a Thursday night, so it's best to budget a generous amount of time, whether you're there to watch Twinkles the Clown, enjoy the sunset happy hour at the poolside bar, and/or eat braised short rib and black cod tacos by Yamashiro's Yamasada stand.
Market organizer Nick Spano of L.A. City Farm tells us new vendors include the Global Soul Truck and Heirloom LA. Matthew Poley and co. will prepare food on-site, as well as arrive supplied with some of Heirloom's signature items. Added produce sellers include Gama and Sweet Tree Farms. Longshot Coffee's equipment will take care of the market's hot beverage and caffeine needs, and one of the Coolhaus trucks will keep the crowds in steady supply of architecturally-themed ice cream sandwiches. Bulgarini Gelato is no longer part of the hilltop evening scene. "They will be missed," Spano says. An understatement.
After last year's difficulties involving parking and other par for the course NIMBY issues, valet is still available at the top of the hill for families schlepping small children and other market-goers whose circumstances require they park on the premises. (Yamashiro parking rates apply but restaurant validation is available.) For just about everyone else, a free shuttle is available from the parking lot at the Fifth Christian Science Church at Hollywood Boulevard and La Brea. This obviously isn't a dash in, dash out situation. But you'd be missing the point.
The market ends in September, an entire a month earlier than last year. So like anything worthwhile that runs in a seasonal cycle, Spano says "enjoy it while you can."
