30 Scoops in 30 Days: Paradis (Day 21)

Paradis: Gelato with Sprinkles

Paradis had already made inroads in Montrose, when the shop opened a new outpost in April on the Hollywood/Los Feliz border. These are, so far, the only two, U.S. franchises of a popular Danish gelato chain with over 30 shops in its native land.

Food, Restaurant, Restaurants, Dining, Cuisine, Eating, Los Angeles, LA, L.A.

Let's state right up front that we have no idea how authentic "Danish-style" gelato or ice cream is meant to taste. The last time we were in Copenhagen, about four years ago, all we wanted was authentic Danish food, but our gracious host was excited to treat us to one of the city's hottest new restaurants, an exciting adventure, a taste they were sure we'd never tried before: a Vietnamese restaurant. As we slurped out tasty pho, we didn't have the heart to explain that we live a freeway's drive from a vast expat Vietnamese community and have access to probably the broadest and deepest array of Vietnamese cuisine anywhere in the world, outside of Vietnam itself.

Paradis: Gelato with Sprinkles

We're not totally sure whether the stuff Paradis serves is gelato or ice cream, though we lean toward the former. It has a smoother texture than ice cream but an icy mouthfeel that verges more toward sorbet. We do know that many of Paradis' flavors taste... underflavored and almost watery, as if all the gelato had been passed through a purification filter.

This works exceptionally well for a few flavors, especially fruit sorbets. We've never had elderflower sorbet like the one at Paradis: delicate, fruity and floral with no hint of grandma's hand lotion. The strawberry sorbet is also a winner. For other flavors, it's a drag. Many of them just taste bland and oversweetened, like stracciatella, caramel fig and pretty much anything with chocolate.

The shop itself is bright, minimal and modern with whimsical touches, sort of like a kid's showroom at Ikea. But with so many knockout gelato places in the vicinity (Gelato Bar on Hillhurst; Pazzo on Sunset), Paradis, which would probably be a standout in any town without LA's breakneck pace of culinary innovation, feels mundane. Paradis or paradise lost?

I think Elina you should open your mind and your  heart too ... how arrogant are you regarding you Danish experience and Your Host bringing you to a Vietnamese restaurant ...

Don't know anything about Paradis, but your comment about Vietnamese food in Copenhagen is spot on. I love my homeland, but some Danes do live in a bubble. :)

It's somewhat difficult for me to take this review(er) too seriously when its biggest paragraph is dedicated to recalling a trip to a Vietnamese restaurant in Copenhagen. I'd ask what this side story had to do with the price of tea in China, or with Paradis ice cream, but I'd be afraid to receive a response from the reviewer in the form of an anecdote regarding the time she mistakenly attempted to order a hamburger while in line at a Panda Express drive-thru.

In regards to the ice cream itself, it's some of my favorite that ranks with, or in many cases above, the other shops on this list. While I've tried a majority of other places, there are several reasons why I continue to go back to Paradis even when its Montrose location meant at least a 45-minute round trip visit.

The mouthfeel is absolutely superb and to the point; I've never had a creamier-tasting sorbet. And let's discuss taste. I'd invite the reviewer, as well as any remaining skeptics, to stand at the counter for five minutes and look at the faces of customers sampling Paradis for the first time. Their puzzled and blissful reactions offer a better retort to accusations of the ice cream being "bland" or "underflavored" than I ever could.

These are flavors that could only be born each and every morning from only natural products imported as far away as Europe and as close as the Montrose Farmers' Market. While other stores may rely on novelty of-the-moment flavors to distinguish their product, Paradis relies on a cookbook with flavors such as Orange Buttermilk, Forestberry, and Banana and Chocolate. They don't use complex recipes because frankly with a product as strong as theirs, they don't need that crutch as it would only serve as a hindrance to enjoying the absolute essence of a particular flavor. Why would anyone make Strawberry Cashew Hazelnut Vodka if they couldn't even get Vanilla right?

I find it hard to believe, if not suspicious, that the opinions on here are rather polarized when Paradis is the highest-rated ice cream shop on Yelp. Standing in line for ice cream in Southern California may be "beyond senseless" to some, but clearly not to the masses Paradis' satisfied customers both here and back in Denmark where there are lines even in the winter months. I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt that not all taste buds are created equally but the majority might just be on to something.

To each his own, but a reviewer should actually visit the place they are reviewing and not just send in their photographer.  If she had actually tried the ICE CREAM (now you dont have to be confused any longer) you would have tasted creamy, healthy, natural and suberb flavors.  You would also have encountered a very friendly and helpful staff & lets not leave out those generous samples we have tried a million of.  Yes, they have Sorbet, which I am normally not a fan of, but these guys take it to a whole new level of fantastic, probably because its healthy, handmade and natural.  I personally find it hard to believe that you could have gone to Paradis in los feliz and not fall in love with the ice cream i eat and savor every day!

After my first bite at Paradis, I became an "ice cream person". It's simply the best ice cream anywhere (or more accurately, ice milk) . It is absolutely unique! And apparently hordes of people agree with me because I usually have to wait in a long line to satisfy this new Paradis craving. (I find the mint/lime sorbet impossible to resist) I suspect the reviewer above sampled Paradis with a mouthful of pho. - Jon from Montrose

Last year I compared a half-dozen gelato places in LA and Orange County, each time ordering one scoop of chocolate and one of pistachio. I included Paradis, because someone had been raving about it at clownhound drat com, but I found (with these flavors, at least) a thin, not subtle ... ice milk is what I'd call it. Whatever it is, I thought it was terrible, so I never returned to try other flavors. Business used to take me to Copenhagen frequently, and I don't remember ever having something this tasteless (food, I mean) in that great food city. Standing in line for it in Southern California is beyond senseless.

Elina and Randy, with all due respect, I think you both should go to the doctor and have him check your taste buds!!  I have been going to Paradis since it opened in Montrose and I have NEVER had anything but ice cream and sorbet LITERALLY BURSTING  with flavor.  And I have checked out other gelato places and there is NO comparison whatsoever!!   The hard working passionate owners of Paradis work very hard to bring FRESH fruit flavors, high quality ice cream and sorbet, and it is, in my opinion, the best ice cream on the planet.  Their chocolate sorbet has the best, dark chocolate flavor I have ever tasted, bar none!   And as to Elina's observations about her Copenhagen experience, what on God's green earth does that have to do with Paradis?  Paradis is authentic Danish ice cream and I personally think Elina and Randy are terribly mistaken, biased, taste deficient, or purposefully being mean or untruthful.  I don't work for Paradis, I don't own stock, I just love this place.  I sometimes sit outside eating and folks walk by and I say, "Don't waste you money down the street, this place has the best ice cream in town."  Invariably, after they try it, they become regulars and thank me.  You two need to reconsider, and visit Paradis again and this time, tell the truth!!  Cliff from La Crescenta and  proud husband of Linda!!

My husband and I have been going to Montrose Paradis regularly since it opened, and we think it is the BEST iced anything on the planet! We have taken many people there, and have never had anyone disagree. First of all, it's not "gelato". There are actually sorbets, and ice milk flavors. It's made fresh every day, in a multitude of flavors that change daily, and very naturally low in calories. You can look on Facebook to see the flavors of the day. All the ingredients are fresh. Many of the fruits used in the process are from the local farmers market. So, you might find Hami Melon flavor one day, and Cantaloupe the next. You can even request a flavor, and as long as it's in season, they'll make it for you.Secondly, maybe there is something wrong with your tastebuds! Paradis ice cream and sorbet has so much flavor! I don't see how you could have given the description that you gave. I think the line of people at the the counter proves that I'm not alone in my opinion. I would urge anyone out there who hasn't tried Paradis, to go there and see for yourself how good it really is.Linda from La Crescenta

Linda, how about comparing it to other places on Elina's list that you've been to? Thanks. -Randy

I went to Gelato bar, to try and to open my mind and my mouth to other experiences ... well, tasteless, higher price for quantity, and I didnt really felt " welcomed" in the shop  ... and you are limited to try 3 flavors only ... and quantities are highly restricted .. I tried Frozen Yogurt too, and lots of chemicals... I prefer healthy and fresh ice creams, and different flavors to try everyday ... well, it s all about a point of you :) I prefer having my craving for ice cream with low fat and quality products :)
