Top 10: Most Kid-Unfriendly Restaurants in Los Angeles

Is there a pediatric burn specialist in the house? Soot Bull Jeep.

Sometimes eating out with kids is all about the path of least resistance, which if you peruse OpenTable Diners' Choice list of the country's 100 most kid-friendly restaurants, seems to be the prevailing philosophy of those who voted. In response, the SF Weekly published a selection of San Francisco's Most Kid-Unfriendly Restaurants. Turns out we can think of quite a few of these in our town, too, and not just ones that routinely win Most Romantic awards.

We understand wanting to expand children's horizons and push comfort zones. That's great -- until they push back. And when that happens, parents and caretakers feel it, hard. So let us spare you some pain by sharing our picks for L.A.'s top 10 least family/kid-friendly restaurants, aka where people without children are sure to keep going.

10. Soho House
"Mommy, why are those men with the big cameras chasing the tiny lady in that black Range Rover?" Paparazzi and other L.A. life lessons can be explained in the Soho House valet area. Same goes for Katana, Koi and wherever else the Entourage scene is these days.

No kids at Father's Office during working hours.

9. Father's Office
We don't have to declare Father's Office to be kid un-friendly. That's already been taken care of. Both locations are licensed as bars, meaning no one under 21 can visit dad at work. Lukshon doesn't seem to have this legal restriction, but between the open flame outdoors and those pristine creamy banquettes inside, we recommend splurging on a sitter and saving this venue for a night out. Hey, here's a crazy thought: restaurants known for terrific burgers and beverage programs such as the Golden State and Umami Burger allow kids AND seem to be doing just fine.

Gjelina: a substition-free zone.

8. Gjelina
When a strict "changes and modifications politely declined" policy means pizza pomodoro is coming with that chili come hell or high water, this might plan not work out so well. If they won't honor Posh's special request, then they certainly won't do it for little Jack or Zoe. Plus why stress over the long waits and open fire pit? Maybe this all explains why Gjelina Take Away seems to be popular with the parent and toddler set.

7. Soot Bull Jeep
Oooooh, glowing coals and open fire... You get where we're going here. Some Korean BBQ restaurants might be better designed for families, but Soot Bull Jeep, with old school grills and a less-than-state-of-the-art ventilation system, is not one of them. Better keep burn relief cream and gauze handy if we haven't successfully deterred you.

6. Urasawa
It's entirely possible that your eight-year-old appreciates an amazing $300 omakase dinner better than many adults would. Some other patrons at this cozy exclusive Beverly Hills restaurant might even find your young dining companion adorable. Hey, it's not our money.

"Kid Unfriendly"?  How about "Kid Hostile"?  I would vote for Lukshon.  They pretty much told us to get lost when I came with my wife and daughter.

That's OK.  There are many other restaurants that actually want my business.  Father's Office I understand.  That is a bar with food.  I don't get Lukshon since the place was a Ghost Town when we were there.  The hostess even told us that they weren't a kid friendly place.  At least they were honest.  Hostile, but honest.

We like Spice Table.  The owner and his wife were very welcoming when we came in and we've been there many times since.

Why is a kid unfriendly restaurant a bad thing? If I spend my hard earned money at Providence or Bazaar, I have no desire to hear your two year old shrieking at the top of its lungs or your 8 year having a tantrum because she wants to go home... Kids don't appreciate fine dining and I don't appreciate your selfishness in bringing them where they aren't wanted, and where they don't want to be either. Solution: hire a sitter or eat at Chuck E Cheese.

I've taken my little nieces to Soot Bull Jeep for dinner.  There was no problem with them trying to touch the fire.  The ventilation is pretty bad, but they were too busy chowing down on kalbi to really be bothered by it.

Actually you see kids all the time at Soho House, Jessica. Including the owners' own children.

@twitter-15241599:disqus There are those articles about the .00000000000001% of the population who brings kids to Le Bernardin, Spago etc. and the staff kindly accommodates them. Not my ideal way of going to upscale/formal restaurants, but to each his/her own.

@facebook-528518957:disqus I agree that Little Tokyo is chock full o' awesome places for family meals. I grew up going to many myself. But since that's the case, I'll pick somewhere else over Daikokoya. If your toddler loves it there, good for you all! And this list isn't about restaurants that provide high chairs, changing tables etc. -- which I usually DO look for.

@twitter-19308180:disqus You're right, Animal would be another one (and was considered). Lazy Ox works for us during the day b/c of the outdoor seating, and with that huge menu families can generally find something for everyone. (Thanks in part to the L.O. burger and fries!)

Even more ammunition against Father's Office...Bazaar and Urusawa seem like no-brainers though, would be good to see even more places like Son of a Gun where people might think they would be good for kids, but actually aren't. What about Lazy Ox or Animal?

Lazy Ox was totally cool with the kid.  And sitting outside on a nice day was perfect.

We took our son to Animal for his 8th birthday (his choice) and the staff was amazing! He was even taken back for a kitchen tour!

Complete disagree with the Daikokuya designation as being not kid-friendly.  Of all the neighborhoods in the City - Little Tokyo has got to be the most kid-friendly as they come. There's the wait, but only when the hipsters come to eat. But it is fucking awesome ramen.  And, as a mommy with a soon-to-be 3 year old...cold ramen on teething gums is the only thing that soothes our child.

Kid friendly...you list says nothing about available diaper changing stations in the restrooms, available high chairs, childrens potties... this isn't a "not kid friendly list" this is a secret attempt to tell parents to "Keep your fucking kids out of these restaurants because we pay too and don't want to see your offspring". which I'm okay with.  Just be upfront about it.

Get a real list of not friendly restaurants...

Good idea for a round-up, and mostly good choices, but I imagine high-priced restaurants like Providence and Cut would probably do a good job of accommodating kids. The cost and a number of dishes would probably just be lost on them, but that's kind of a different issue.

I'd like to see Disneyland offer one day a year where they don't let anybody in under 21.

Father's office restrictions make sense at the Santa Monica location, but the Helms bakery location policy is stupid. They recently turned my 12 year old daughter and me away - said "the owner likes it this way". Really, my kid can't sit outside on the patio and eat lunch? Stupid policy and I wlll never recommend the restaurant to anyone. Father's Office, you suck.

As a childfree person, I have the right to have a place to go where I don't have to hear, see, or be annoyed with your spawn. Go to Chilies, Denny's, or anywhere else where it is kid-friendly. It is proven that childfree people spend more money than people with kids, so resturant owners and managers will always cater to us...stay home, or get a babsitter you prick.

@Melissa - while I agree with you for the most part, I think your vitriol is misguided. I hardly think a well-behaved 12-y-old dining quietly with her father is likely to bother anyone in any genuine sense. All the 12-y-olds I have met have far better manners than most entitled twenty-something snots around town.

As a parent of four, I forced myself to stay out of restaurants (though, when I gots the $, I love them so!) for many years. Besides not wanting to ruin a fellow human's night out with my little ones, I don't want to have my evening out spent correcting unruly behaviour.Small family coffee shops are great for kids as the waitstaff (usually) understand kids and know how to serve them and keep mom and dad smiling.

I've taken my 3 year old to Lukshon. She liked it and was well behaved. But then, she's the exception, not the rule.

Sure she is....you all say that crap. It's  not true.

Can't remember where it was now, but I read one patron's story of really poor treatment of her and her child at Lukshon. She wrote that the staff seemed to be trying to make them feel unwelcome. This was from someone who was not self-involved and didn't think that her child could cause any problems, as well.

They told us we could sit in the patio in the middle of winter or get lost.  It was probably the worst treatment I ever experienced at a restaurant.

That said, we went to the Foundry last night and they were nice.  The best part was they had a Blues Band play and my daughter danced to the music for a couple of songs.  Wish I knew the name of the band because they were very cool.  My daughter loves the Blues.

I'll be honest, they told me we'd be put on the patio when I called to let them know she was coming. I also called them out on it which got the hostess flustered. But at the same time, I completely understood. Just in case she got antsy, I would prefer not bothering other diners. I guess everyone got lucky it worked out. And the patio is perfectly acceptable on a nice evening

Out of all the wrong things Father's Office done, "kid-unfriendliness" is not at the top of my list.
