Peach Donuts at Donut Man in Glendora

Guzzle & Nosh
A seasonal peach donut from The Donut Man in Glendora.
By now, we've all probably heard about Jim Nakano's legendary strawberry donuts: "flattened demisphere[s] big enough to use as a Pilates cushion, split in two and filled to order with what must be an entire basket of fresh strawberries, and only in season." Fewer people know that Glendora's patron saint of fried dough also makes a peach variation of this same donut for about month during summer -- and it's even better than the original strawberry.

Donut Man: Exterior

Pro Tip: Never get one of Donut Man's peach donuts the first couple weeks they're on offer. The peaches tend to be bland, underripe and too crisp. Wait until the middle or end of the run -- which happens to be right now.

Get thee to Glendora by the middle of September. Donut Man's peach donuts last only as long as the peaches stay sweet and juicy. That means you have one more week, maybe two, to sample the sweetest fruit of all: fresh, tender peach wedges glazed in something like pie filling and spilling forth from rounds of airy, deeply fried dough.

i actually like underripe peaches so i was happy when i went a month ago.  that said, i was really blown away by their apple fritter.

I haven't tried Donut Man peaches this season yet, so your report is quite welcome, Elina. In the last few years they've been consistently under-ripe, often quite hard. In fact, since at least 2008, I've ranked DM peach quality a distant last compared to the exceptional peach pies at: (1) Bake 'n Broil in Long Beach (first) and (2) Pie 'n Burger in Pasadena. Why can't Donut Man do at least as well?

Their strawberry donuts are very good (although I prefer the chocolate-dipped whole strawberries). But nothing compares to the light-and-airy crullers, massive apple fritters (careful -- your diabetic third cousin, twice-removed could go into sugar shock just by hearing that you've had one), or simple plain glazed, among others, especially if eaten approx. 0-12 minutes after they come out (it does vary), usually in the wee hours. Even the donut holes can be spectacular if they're still warm.

Remember, when you step up to the counter at any donut place -- but particularly a great one like Donut Man, where the stakes are so high -- the question to ask is, "What's fresh?" not, "What are the foodists buying?"

I stopped by DM around midnight last night and got a plain glazed just off the fryer and a peach donut. The glazed was excellent -- light, a bit gooey -- even with coffee from a nearby McDonald's. The peaches were ripe and juicy but lacking in character and flavor. Must be from Disneyland trees.
