Chef Ludo + Animal Flaunt Impending Foie Gras Ban

foieparty.jpg
It's a foie gras feast at Animal.
With a state law that bans the sale of foie gras coming down the pipeline like so much corn meal down a duck's throat, trust a Frenchman to lead the chefs' rebellion against the impending foie gras ban.

Chef Ludo Lefebvre has teamed with Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo to host a foie gras feast at Animal. The two-night event happens October 14th and 15th, and it's not cheap: $175/person. They start taking reservations (via phone ONLY) tomorrow at 2 p.m.: (323) 782-9225.

Get it before it's gone. SB 1520, which bans the force-feeding of ducks or geese to make foie gras (a practice known as gavage) and forbids selling foie gras produced that way, was signed into law in 2004 and will take effect in July 2012.

The abuse at industrial egg laying operations are much worse and involves much larger numbers of birds. If this was about animal welfare the obvious protest would be to stop McDonald's from serving Egg McMuffin's. But it's not about the animals its about an American puritanical streak is always seeking an excuse to sabotage pleasure and luxury. No one wants to here about the horrific suffering of the billions of animals in our industrial food system that makes the Dollar Menu possible. But it's easy to organize against elitist pleasure seekers. What's sad is that foie gras, a truly beautiful food is outlawed while lousy McDonald's food is free to roam the streets leaving a wake of obesity, heart disease and diabetes in it's wake.

Gavage is not cruel, nor does it cause any stress to the animal when done patiently which both farms in the US do.

Gavage is not cool. And despite popular belief, eating the liver of a force-fed animal won't increase your cool factor either.
