Senate Blocks Obama's Bill to Limit Potato Consumption in Schools

The Senate hearts potatoes.

Hell no, potatoes won't go! Okay, we imagine it wasn't quite that dramatic on the Senate floor, but still. On Tuesday the Senate voted to stop an Obama initiative that would have limited the amount of potatoes and other starchy vegetables that can be served in school lunchrooms, The New York Times reports.

Had it passed, vegetables including white potatoes, corn, green peas and lima beans would have limited to a serving of one cup per student per week, and banned from all breakfasts.

The Senate blocked the bill by adopting an amendment to the 2012 spending bill, which prohibits setting "any maximum limits on the serving of vegetables in school meal programs."

While we imagine the president was likely trying to curb the ubiquitous side of fries, the Times quotes Senator Mark Udall of the potato-growing state of Colorado as saying, "Anything can be fried or drowned in any number of fats available to us as consumers," elaborating that potatoes shouldn't be vilified simply because they're prepared in unhealthy ways.

Well, I'm surprised.

Didn't the potato lobby put in as much money as the corn lobby? Shame on them. What's killing the kids is high-fructose corn-syrup and modified corn-oil and corn-fed animals, kept penned and caged and fed tons (literally TONS,) of antibiotics to fatten them up before they drop dead of disease.

Maybe they should all eat melons? ...

Oh Mr. Pitiful, how I truly pity thee,

Yes indeed, this is another example of how the "Big Government President" is trying to control the masses.  Perhaps he saw a problem (childhood obesity) and tried to offer a solution (less fat-causing food in schools)... That's right ladies and gentlemen, a logical sequence of thoughts, something you won't get from the GOP.  And additionally, this is not the government telling you what to eat.  This is the government deciding what should be served in governement run schools... it makes sense to me that the food should be as health as possible.  And my final thought, at least liberals can spell potato...

WHY NOT JUST BAN FRIED FOODS GENIUS!!! Lima beans?!?!

Lima beans are a very good source of cholesterol-lowering fiber, as are most other legumes. In addition to lowering cholesterol, lima beans' high fiber content prevents blood sugar levels from rising too rapidly after a meal, making these beans an especially good choice for individuals with diabetes, insulin resistance or hypoglycemia. When combined with whole grains such as rice, lima beans provide virtually fat-free high quality protein. You may already be familiar with beans' fiber and protein, but this is far from all lima beans have to offer.

Are you starting to see what Big Government is all about? I can remember a few years ago when I complained that "next, they'll be trying to tell us what we can and cannot eat," and my shallowest friends chortled that I was going overboard.

"While we imagine the president was likely trying to curb the ubiquitous side of fries ...."

Here's a new prediction: Some Big Government-president will increase the national debt by 40%-50% in three or four years, and young liberals will find a way to overlook what that will do to the country and their lifestyles for the next forty or fifty years. Oh, wait ....

STFU. You don't even know what you're eating, how it was grown, or even how it gets to your grocery store.

Calling the USDA and the FDA Big Gummint ignores who their REAL clients are, (hint is ain't me and thee.)

They're there to make sure that when a recall gets issued, after a few of us citizens have died, the recall procedures are followed so we can't sue the bastards in court.

You're living in a fantasy land where the gummint ain't already been bought and we ain't been sold by the pound.

Wake up and smell Guatamela's coffee.
