Dippin' Dots Bankrupt: Files Chapter 11

Dippin' Dots, those frozen ice cream pellets that pop up at the county fair every summer, might not be around much longer. The Wall Street Journal reports that the company filed for Chapter 11 today in U.S. Bankruptcy court in Paducah, Kentucky.

The company has struggled to pay a $12 million debt to its biggest lender, which moved to foreclose on the loan this week. The company hopes to reorganize so it can continue to operate.

In the meantime, with roughly 50 Southern California locations where you can buy Dippin' Dots, it might be a good time to get your fix before you can't.

What will a world without Dippin' Dots look like? It's a bleak, DIY future where you'll have to purchase an expensive thermos called a dewar to hold liquid nitrogen, then learn how to safely use the stuff so you don't asphyxiate yourself for lack of oxygen. Maybe it's better to make the trip to the shopping mall or the movie theater and buy the real thing more often.
