Burger Kitchen on Kitchen Nightmares: A Family in the Grinder

Ramsay and the owner's son, Daniel.
Back in August, we let you know that 3rd Street's Burger Kitchen had re-opened after getting the Gordon Ramsay treatment on Kitchen Nightmares. Last week, the episode aired and the action was so thick, furious, and brutal that the producers have appeared to slot a second part for broadcast on November 11th.

We've seen Ramsay scream curses at poor money managers and imbecilic line cooks. We've seen him spit unappetizing food on to the floor of a restaurant in a way that makes the prospect of eating even tasty food totally unappetizing. We've also seen his hair jut out at absurd angles like platinum stalagmites and his shirts get tighter season after season. Yet never have we seen this natural-born screamer at a loss for words. At times during last week's episode, he was.

While who knows what miracles of exclusion the show's editing staff have wrought, the Australian-born owner of Burger Kitchen admits to snatching $250,000 from his son's inheritance to keep the business running -- without his son's permission. Other crimes pile up. He has flown in dry, pre-made patties of Australian Waygu. He has bounced checks left and right. Even worse, he has, it seems, instructed his cooks not to add salt to the restaurant's burgers.

No one comes off too pretty in the episode, from the head chef throwing around crazy eyes and telling the owner's wife to try Prozac; to the owner's wife, simultaneously serious and nutty, making a stink about a bit of wine added to some sauteed mushrooms; to the owner himself, bumbling yet confident, numb to criticism, grinning as he dubs himself a "meat expert." Even the desperate son, the logical protagonist, ends up in screaming matches.

If the power struggle isn't gory enough on its own, the countless shots of glistening half-raw burgers hacked up on plates drive home the conceit -- domestic carnage, a family funneled through the grinder.

Not that Kitchen Nightmares is a show about food. Though you'll see a well-appointed plate from time to time, there's very little cooking on it, and even less successful eating, as Ramsay's curses and spitting constantly remind us. Foremost, it's a show about humiliation, human folly, and hubris. Idiots turn shockingly bad ideas into restaurants. Good cooks show off a dizzying lack of business sense. Inept bosses heap blame on underlings, even as the ship they've steered sinks.

As reported in August, Burger Kitchen now boasts an "interactive blackboard," fried pickles, and a burger called the "Juicy Lucy," but the story is just too sad and nasty for us to want to give it another shot. Whether or not the re-tooled food can transcend the on-screen mayhem is a question for the Yelpers, and having watched this first installment, they're already circling like vultures.

I can't believe Gordon Ramsey did not scream at those meanies for Ruining Daniel's life and Firiing David. Dan's sister and David were the good guys in this episode. THIS WAS THE worst episode ever TO BE AIRED. It should be banned

The mother was a nutcase with a bad attitude, the father had a huge ego and was fame hungry, the son was a stoner who couldn't handle going bald so young and his girlfriend was a smug hipster who will dump him as soon as the cash runs out. I noted that he had been given $1m so I won't cry for him just yet. He needs to escape and get his life sorted. More details of the corrupt greedy family can be found on wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A...

I don't like to lady owner reffering to her polish heritage. And mushroom is not a polish thing! I would not like people to think that all polish people behave like that!

I found it interesting in researching the book that Alan wrote about his own father, that was featured in the show, that most of the "inheritance" was from ill-gotten gains.  Alan's own father was a reputed underworld figure in NSW Austraila.  He ran nightclubs, bordellos and bootlegged booze.  I think bad Karma is hanging like a cloud over this place.

It must be said, though: The burgers were decent in the restaurant's first couple of months. Not transcendent, but definitely made with good, aged meat.

It's awful to reach a point where you wish people and behaviors from the distant past still "ruled," but I'm there -- my opinion being reinforced by this piece and most of the comments and lurkers. I really MUST start working on a story for St. Peter defending my role in bringing new communication technologies to the masses. "And then this guy said ...." I wonder which line Gutenberg tried when he passed? Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott? Nah, that came later, although still in the distant past.

I have worked at too many restaurants to get on board with the idea that this show has been 'staged'.  I see two arrogant owners who have taken their son's money involunarily and have left the son holding the bag.  Alan and Gen have no place owning a restaurant, and have shown absolutely no respect for their son.  They have dragged him into a business and have done it badl. The the son is then left holding the bag in order to save his inheritance.  This is unforgivealbe.  It is lucky these two parents still have a relationship with their son, and are not being sued by him.  The son has every right to do anything he can to a) turn the business around and ignore his incompetent parents or b) in our litigious society, sue the fu%king pants off them.

Totally sue those f*cking parents! They are thieves and don't give a shit about him! It makes me sick!

Hello, I see you saw the rerun last night (mar 2).

If you didn't know it, the restaurant closed.

From what I saw on that episode, there was no way those two were going to let the son actually run the place.

Take a look at YELP and the menu on the restaurant's website. They completely screwed up with Ramsay put together.

I wonder where Jalapeno is working.

I used to work for Alan and Gen when they managed a local toy store in Santa Monica called the "Puzzle Zoo". Nothing about them has changed. People expect to led; not managed. Also, respect from subordinates and co-workers alike comes from motivating your team, withholding no knowledge, and highlighting the best qualities or every team member. Alan, you have epically failed yet again. You had it coming. Gen: Your bossing people around has never worked. Just because you own a business does not mean you own the workers. Tact is a quality you have always lacked. Also, do something about your bad breath as well as Alan's. It has been the joke of every one of your employees to well over a decade.

watching the show now...maybe the dad is a drunk, he is social and wants to be in charge..get rid of the parents, send them to Palm Springs

The Dad was and probably still is a totally close-minded fool. His actions are so telling,; there is no way that man behind the bar, they should put an electronic shocking dog collar on him to keep him where he actually has value. His son has shown he can save the business, but the old fool, and his pride, are going to try and bring the business down with his ideas that have been proven wrong over and over again, proving his ownership of the label of "fool".

Yes, I believe many of these 'failing' rest shows of Ramsey's do not make it long after he leaves.  Research DOES show that they sold it and probably good that they did.

Ok but remember that Chef Ramsey is brought on to save these failing restaurants. They aren't going to make it if they go back to their old ways one bit! You know that they do go back and they fail, especially with this mother and father! They were hard headed a-holes!! Poor son! Hope the best for him!!

It's like "Hoarders"-the underlying disease is still there after the "expert" clears out.

I hope some time Ramsay just goes into a restaurant and says, "Screw this, just close the thing".

Do you know how to become a millionaire in the restaurant business? Start out as a multimillionaire.

I don't think that chef Ramsay's intervention has much to do with the eventual failure of these restaurants.  These restaurants were already swirling in the commode, which is why they called 'kitchen nightmares'.  It is likely that the vast majority of these restaurants would fail without any intervention. Chef Ramsay only delayed the inevitable in many, many cases.  Chef Ramsay, and the show, have no control over inept owners, or bad chefs.

Let you in on a secret Bigmouth - they make a comment that the burger that Chef Blaine makes is not medium rare... Ramsey's only comment is that it is juicy and tastes good.  I can cook you a burger that is medium well and has lots of flavour and is juicy inside.  It will be grey when you bite into as well... does not mean it's overcooked.  I think you're jumping to conclusions about what you saw for a few seconds on TV.

Other than getting the ripped-off son his inheritance back so he could take his girl & escape this chaotic nightmare (and his terrible parents), why would you, in your right mind, want to help any of these people?    Places go out of business due to incompetent management who won't listen to their staff or the customer - it's just a law of the business world - like the laws of gravity in Physics.   There was nothing redeeming in a Father, who would steal his son's money right in front of him, a Mother who did nothing to stop it from happening, and a Father, again, who would speak to the world through his book about how mistreated he was by his own Father all while ignoring and mentally abusing his own son....I would have rather watched Chef Ramsay help my local Taco Bell re-organize their sauce packets, or help my local McDonald's, who can't seem to get their drive through orders correct lately, than see him spend any effort, or another dollar on these despicable people......

Inheritances pass on only when the previous owner, um, passes on.

that money was left to him by his grandfather in a trust fund for him; not his father.  His father had his own money, but went through it and has access to his son's trust fund.

I definitely agree to everything. I feel bad about the son and girlfriend. But the parents are ignorant a-holes! They stole his money and are ok with it. That's sick!! I'm sad the business is closed but it's probably the best for the son. A door closes but another will open & something great will happen for him. Good luck to him and karma will take care of his parents

Does the show even matter? BK's already been sold to a new team according to Eater's post on August 31st.

I think Kitchen Nightmares jumped the shark this episode. It was so painfully obvious the burger made by Chef David Blaine (lol) was overcooked and grey. Yet Ramsey went right ahead and praised it anyway just to make a point. This show has always been more of a morality play than a cooking show, but it's become so formulaic that it's almost an insult to viewers.

Yeah that's the thing that made me say "Okay, I've had enough of this show." You've read so many owners mention how the show is simply staged to fit the storyline that there has to be some truth to the claims... I mean, it's not like I expect honesty out of reality TV, but when it's just clearly being made up... That burger did not look good and I was expecting GR to throw up his hands and say "Can ANYONE cook around here?" But then he praised it, obviously just to create drama with the woman.
