Top 10 Famous Vegans

Animal Planet
2. Mike Tyson (Age 35) The former boxer's bizarre public trajectory got a little weirder when Animal Planet gave Tyson his own reality show, Taking On Tyson, where he nurtures and races pigeons. But it turns out that Tyson has been a lifelong bird-lover, and his first punch as a child was directed at a boy who killed one of his birds. Tyson went vegan in 2009 and said it made him feel better than ever.

1.Thom Yorke (Age 43)
The Radiohead frontman lists the song "Meat Is Murder" by The Smiths as one of the reasons he chose to go vegan (Morrissey, the famous Smiths frontman, is vegetarian). Yorke told the United Kingdom's Animal Aid that aside from the song, meat consumption caused him physical illness until he gave it up for good (plus, he was trying to impress a girl). Animal Aid cites Yorke as a vegetarian, but MTV Europe confirmed Yorke is a vegan.

To the person who questioned how many people actually hunt for their own meat and named Mark Zuckerberg.  Well up here in Alaska, lots of people hunt for their own meat, in fact it is almost moose hunting season and I have friends who are out caribou hunting right now. We catch a lot of our own fish too.  I don't know when the last time I actually bought fish at the store but instead I use the supply I have from fishing. Hunting is a way of life for Alaska Natives in villages where good produce is expensive and hard to find. So I find it hypocritical for some vegans to be so highly critical and negative on those who eat meat.  Some people depend on meat for survival. Try living in an Alaskan village on just berries and their limited supply of produce. It'll certainly be harder to keep warm without the benefit of muktuk and fish oil! ;o) Ah and don't forget the barbecued seal meat, yum! Now Im not really against the vegan diet, Im actually looking into the raw food diet for myself but still would like to eat chicken, fish and beef on occasion. I just find it a shame that some vegans act like elitists and try to force their "karmic" beliefs on us as if all meat eaters are evil. Countries of the world, rich and poor, urban and village (especially) depend on products from animals for food resources. Your not going to change the whole world to vegan and in extremely colder climates like up north, its pretty much impossible. So let it go and truly live "The Kind Life". ;o)

Really interesting list... Funny how all the derogatory, sarcastic and negative comments are from meat eaters? Obviously meat eaters are not compassionate at all and have low intelligence levels... must be the meat!

Actually, I do take offense to that. I am a meat eater but respect the different life styles of people. I do not force my "Omnivorism" on anybody. I prefer non processed, natural meat. Fresh fish and deer meat are a staple in my diet. I am a compassionate human being and an animal lover, but being a Vegan is something I can't do.

you think you can't, but you can. And you are forcing your omnivorism on every animal you eat. My rule is, does it move by itself? Is it trying to get away? Then don't eat it.

Did anyone notice that they have said the vegan diet or vegan eating choices?  Vegan means using no animal product, which means no leather, fur, or anything that can be linked to animals, a strict vegetarian eats like a vegan, but is still not called one.  I hate when I hear people say "I'm vegan" but they are wearing leather shoes.

I think referring to it as the vegan "diet" is clarifying in this regard, in contrast to calling it a vegan "lifestyle" which would entail all aspects of LIVING cruelty-free rather than simply EATING that way.

This is all well and good, but half of these people aren't vegan - they just eat a plant-based diet.  Veganism is a lifestyle that includes not using animal products as much as possible; we're talking about clothing, make-up, cleaning supplies, etc.  Just not eating animal products does not make you vegan.  It makes you a strict vegetarian.

@ Captain Way Mike Tyson is a truly fascinating man. Take some time and get to know him now. He's evolved from a mega-wealthy brute who beat people up for a living and a sexual predator to a vegan philosopher of peace and  anti-materialism. He's my guru.

Mike Tyson is 42.

Russell Simmons is a hypocrite. He takes a month off each year and eats filet mignon, drinks tequila and smokes cigars. It's true.

Nice article, but the Korean BBQ ad at the top is disgusting. Can't you guys prevent that? Also, why the need to dis Alanis? That was petty and irrelevant in an otherwise interesting article

It is so much more sensible and ecological  to hunt and gather your food, than buy vegetables that have been grown maybe thousands of kilometres away, and using fertilizers.

Pick up berries, vegetables and mushrooms in the forest, fish on the nearby lake, and hunt animals in the near forest. That's the best way.

Wow, hypocrite!  I bet you think animals have the right to vote too, stop giving animals man made rights and start living by natures; Go feed yourself to a hungry ENDANGERED tiger.

Sara

It's not about rights, it's about welfare. Animals shouldn't have rights---but they should have the chance to live a natural life in the wild--instead of a factory, chained to the ground. I can't think of anything more natural than to go into a McDonalds and order a cow that was raised, tortured, and murdered by someone else -- all for under $2.

Hunting for your own food is 10 times more respectable than buying factory farmed animals, but how many people actually hunt for their meat----and only eat the meat that they hunt? I can name one- Mark Zuckerberg, but that's about it.

You don't have to go to the grocery store to buy vegetables you can go to farmers markets, and grow your own vegetables.

The color here is grey---not black and white.

This list, although just a start is a good representation of the variety of people that are vegan. It spans all social, cultural, racial, political, socio-economic and geographic sectors - an indicator that Veganism is HERE TO STAY and rapidly growing.

Take a stand for your health, the environment and the animals - Try Vegan : )

Not good for the environment, considering that some places will need to have all those veggies, fruits, and legume imported.  Also, resulting in erosion.  People complain about the chemicals in meat, but forget the chemicals on produce, the runoff into water, and any genetic modifications.  If you really want to save the planet eat humans, there's an abundance of them.

Lucas Melbye

The argument that plant based diet causes erosion is absurd.  What do cows eat?  Plants.

They eat many many plants, and then when they get large enough from eating lots of plants we kill and eat them.

A plant based diet minimizes but doesn't completely stop environmental destruction.  However, it is a tremendous difference.

Um, not to diminish the potential health benefits of a vegan lifestyle, but I simply can't stand to see all of those defenseless plants hurt just to put food on famous people's plates.

I wish they made a movie about the floral industry ... Butchers, all of them stem-cutters!

I am an environmental studies major and I think people should eat locally.  I live in agricultural state so I can be a vegetarian, but some people don't live where plants thrive, so they should eat meat.  I'd also use animal products to keep warm then things made of plastic, you know because oil and the environment don't mix.  To each his own, some people care about the animals and some people care about the places that keep everything alive.

I know that she's not on the list, but why would you use a header pic of Lisa? I thought that she was just a vegetarian. Did I miss something?

Great list, with a few surprises. However, Thom Young in at #1, and four high profile vegans didn't even make the list? Pam Anderson, Natalie Portman, Robin Gibb, and certainly Sir Paul McCartney should have made the list.
