10 Best Breakfast Spots in Los Angeles

Canele

1. Canele
Canele's rustic, seasonal brunch menu certainly seems innocuous enough. "Thick French toast," for example, or a "side" of "baked pancake with meyer lemon custard." As it turns out, this "thick French toast" is a trio of inches-high slabs of French toast, ridiculously crispy on the outside, wonderfully custardy on the inside. The "baked pancake" is what happens when a pancake meets a tart, a fluffy concoction served in a ramekin and topped with a custard just lemony enough to offset the sweetness of the dough. The savories, like the fried faro with eggs and sriracha, are just as good, and that house-cured bacon! Is everything you want in bacon, and then some. That the dishes are nothing you expect - only infinitely better - is endearing, in a way, as if the restaurant is much too shy to ever tell you that the best brunch in Los Angeles is served up between its lil' ol' brick walls. We'll be a pal and toot its horn on its behalf: this is indeed the best in the city. 3219 Glendale Blvd., Los Angeles, (323) 666-7133.

I'm glad the spots in the SFV weren't mentioned. The last thing I want is one of my spots to be overrun by a bunch of LA hipsters.

You guys forgot Cici's in the Valley. No Valley love?

I'm seriously thinking of starting my own "L.A." weekly publication that doesn't cater to lame wannabe trendies that buy into crap like this. I wonder what the health grades were for these shitholes.

I've got to add Mix N Munch in South Pasadena.

You forgot Siam Sunset. For a Thai breafast *exactly* like one you might get in Thailand. Of course Thais aren't know for their breakfasts but it is very authentic. Hugos breakfast pasta is also pretty good.

We agree with Myke- you missed The Nickel Diner-Downtown LA, and also The Ocean Park Omelette Parlor!

This list SUCKS!!!!  What about Olympic Cafe on Olympic or CJ's Pantry on Pico?  Great service, great prices and great food!  Old school, breakfast.

As always, the best choices are completely excluded from your top 10 lists, including Jacks & Joe's (on Figueroa near USC).

Terrible list. Canele is amazing, but not for brunch. Where are The Alcove, The Griddle, Toast, Blu Jam Cafe, Jar and Bld?

Dominic Pace

Nice PR work by those restaurants... but I'm sorry.. The correct answers are Blu Jam Cafe, The Griddle Cafe - OFFICIAL SITE, and Cece's in Tarzana

Not exactly sure how Square One Dining made this list. After reading this article, I went there for a bite to eat. Let me just say that it was not worth the $50 I spent. Granted, the baked chorizo egg dish is small, it is also very good. On the other hand, the pancakes were very bland. And that includes using the caramel sauce as a topping. Definately not worth the extra $3 you spend for the sauce. In addition, the omlette was just as bland. Think twice before venturing off to this place.

I'm not reviewing the restaurants as I haven't been there yet. I thoroughly enjoyed the accolades given by Tien Nguyen for Canale.  Sounds killer! However, breakfast is a morning meal. A restaurant that opens at 10am on the weekends and is only open for dinner on the weekdays does not serve within breakfast hours. Therefor it cannot be in this list. For those of us reading this glorious review and wanting to have this food  in the morning, it's dissappointing to find out THIS PLACE ISN'T OPEN FOR BREAKFAST!  Brunch is not breakfast. This was called 10 top breakfasts spots.

Wow, I was born and raised in L.A. I've never seen a list that sucked as bad as this one.

It is rare for me to find something on the cyberspace that’s as entertaining and fascinating as what you’ve got here. Your page is lovely, your graphics are outstanding, and what’s more, you use source that are relevant to what you are talking about. You are certainly one in a million, well done!

I was so excited to check out Canele after reading this review. My friend and I went last weekend and we were sorely disappointed. The food was subpar, it took too long, and the hostess was as unbelievably rude. I was actually alarmed by how unfriendly she is. Definitely skip this place.

Typical LA Politically Correct bullshit.  Any list that does not include Duke's is inherently faulty. Vietnamese breakfast? Yeah, sure, that's what I wake up and hope for. This list would be great if you were taking out Nancy Pelosi and Barney Frank on the same ticket... but get real.

This list does suck. What about 26 beach in Venice?? And who the hell is eating noodles for breakfast.

Canele is number 1??? Are you frickin' kidding me??? Have you even eaten there, Tien Nguyen? Or are you just re-running some LA Weekly review from 5 years ago?

Just came back from Canele this morning.  One of the worst brunch experiences of my entire life.  Extremely mediocre food and unexplained 1 hour wait when 7 tables were open.  Wow LA Weekly, you gotta proof these reviews.

My top 10 in no order: Nicks, Nickel Diner, Eggslut Truck, The Griddle, Barneys Greengrass, Square One, Roscoes, The Serving Spoon, Polo Club, Campanille. Honorable mention: Loteria!

JayDeez's in Alhambra have a good breakfast.  Try the Spanish omelet or steak and eggs.

Woot! Huge Tree!

BTW, the caption on that should be "green onion pancake with egg". Just FYI.

This is your list for best breakfast spots in LA? Really? This is one of the most pathetic breakfast lists I've ever seen. Who the hell eats fried faro with eggs for breakfast or pho in LA?

Maybe someone named Tien Nguyen eats Pho for breakfast?  Jeez.

Canele is awesome for breakfast. They make great omelets. The one that should have made this list is Four Cafe in Eagle Rock.
