In these DIY times, what consitutes "underground?" If you have a website and a sign up list, is your function really off the radar?

For the underground food event Eat Well Market founded by Aimee Silver and taking place on Jan. 29, the term seems to mean a single layer of secrecy -- she's not widely disclosing what vendors have been tapped to participate. We like that it adds a fun element of surprise to the festivities. Other than that, they have a simple form to fill out to attend and are encouraging everyone to bring the kids and spend a nice afternoon at Camp Mariposa in Altadena, buying and trying new food, meeting new friends and "celebrating life."

The all organic ("or better") offerings -- 80% of which promise to be prepared food -- will include backyard fruit, homemade kombucha, breads, grass fed beef, kimchi, desserts and lots more. We hear whisperings that {Brothel} Soups will be there with four varieties, including a vegan mushroom version. That alone should tempt you to head on over. According to their Facebook pages: Ardenwood Edibles will also be giving away seedlings; The Chaparral Mountain Honey Co. and Coldwater Canyon Provisions will be on hand with their honey and jams.

Everyone attending is being gently reminded that some of the foods that will be for sale have not been prepared in commercial kitchens and may not be government approved. This of course gives us pause, but then again, we've all gone to potlucks and managed to survive, right? Just make sure to use common sense. And bring a re-usable shopping bag.

The cash only market takes place from 12 - 3 p.m. and you must sign up on line to attend. Future markets will take place monthly.

Final thought: Camp Mariposa is a Girl Scouts of America property, which leads us to sincerely hope someone invited a few of the local scouts to sell cookies, even if they are about as far from organic as possible.
