Plan Check to Open on Sawtelle on Feb. 22

Plan Check: Exterior

Plan Check, the newest entrant to Sawtelle's buzzing restaurant row, will open Feb. 22. The upper-midscale gastropubby restaurant features chef Ernesto Uchimura (Umami Burger) behind the stoves and mixologists Steve Livigni and Pablo Moix (La Descarga, Harvard & Stone, Black Market) behind the bar -- or at least the cocktail program.

Look for upscale versions of comfort food, such as gourmet burgers, fried chicken and pot roast.

On the boozy side, the menu is heavy on craft beers and Japanese whiskeys as well as custom cocktails by Moix and Livigni. The duo have even attempted to rehab Midori, a melon liqueur that tastes like alcoholic gummy bears and is most notable as an LPR (liquid panty remover). If anyone can elevate the bright green liqueur above the realm of "quickest way to get sorority girls drunk," they can.

The name refers to the adjacent Building & Safety Department, where city bureaucrats accept (or reject) building permits. The look is a "polished industrial motif."

An Unexpected Surprise!by Tina Logan (1 review) I didn't plan to visit Plan Check, but I was hungry and had an inkling that this was going to be a good experience. Today was their one month anniversary. The first thing that hit my culinary senses when I walked in the front door was the sweet smell of, what I thought to be barbeque sauce. I glanced at the menu the nice maitre'd graciously handed me and to my delight, saw burgers! Burgers are my all time favorite, and beginning my burger adventure 7 years ago in South Central, I hadn't found any to compare, finally, a delicious burger. I ordered the Chefs Favorite, from my hostess Rachel. She recommended cooking the wagyu meat at medium rare(did you know, it has less cholesterol), which I agreed. If looks could kill, the fried egg on top of the burger looked plastic it was so perfect. My first bite the yellow yolk of the egg gushed out onto the small round cast-iron skillet that held the burger. This burger had a different flavor, more sophistacated than most. The melted cheese was delicious, memorable american, parmasean, dashi, and a cheddar crisp, accompanied by two strips of substantial bacon, yum! Their ketchup is hand made each day, with a sweet flavor and good texture. The burger had a good sesame bun, only wishing that it was all served a little hotter. I also tried the spicy cucumber, sriracha, with sesame. I loved it's crunchiness and different flavor coming from the sriracha's heat. Cruller donuts are cruel, and the bomb, deliciously lavished in cream and bananas, also hand made daily. There is alot of love and care in this kitchen and bar. The warm hospitality I was shown made for a wonderful experience. Stay tuned, next time I will take my camera and add photos.
