Grilled Cheese
Has any sober person ever pondered why grilled cheese sandwiches are called that, when they aren't typically made on a grill? They're griddled. It's a griddled cheese sandwich.

Griddled, grilled, baked or battered and deep fried, they're still utterly delicious and the focus of the 10th Annual Grilled Cheese Invitational, sponsored by Cabot Creamery. Registration is open now and the event itself takes place Saturday, April 28, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Lot K of the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

You can register to compete, to judge or just hang out and enjoy. Other than the featured food, there will be entertainment, vendors, a Cheese Calling contest, a costume contest and, naturally, a poetry contest. We're already crafting an Ode to Oozing Edam on Wheat.

If you're not inclined to cook, tickets are $15. You can also sign up to be a judge for $25. Use that power wisely.

If you want to get your pans fired up, it's $25 to be one of 250 amateurs or $50 to be one of the 50 professionals competing for bragging rights in one of the four categories: Love, American Style; Missionary Position; Kama Sutra and Honey Pot. That's code for: classic/plain; any bread and any two cheeses; savory sandwich with fillings and dessert style. They provide everything -- burner, pans, spatula, etc. -- and you just bring ingredients.

At the end of the day this really is a band of easygoing sandwich enthusiasts whose party got bigger than the local park could accommodate. Nothing about it is overly serious. It's just the cheesiest fun you can have on a Saturday afternoon in April, which also happens to be National Grilled Cheese Month conveniently brought to you by the Dairy Farmers of America.

The event is sure to sell out, so register now. Bread-Butter-Cheese-Victory!

beer! this competition would be so much better with beer involved. Maybe a beer garden. I know the smell from all of that beer and cheese macerating around in people's quickly filling stomachs will result in the creation of some unholy gasses but nothing washes down a nice gourmet grilled cheese quite like beer does.

Oh wait, maybe wine. =)

We've had a beer AND wine garden for the last two years and this year stands to be no different!

good to know, thanks! Usually events with beer promote the hell out of the beers involved and not having been to one of these in a while, I wasnt sure =)
