Is Sugar Toxic? Research Says Yes

Sugar
We hope everyone knows by now that sugar is bad for you. But just how bad? Is it merely empty calories we have to spend an extra hour at the gym to sweat off? Apparently, no. A research team from the University of California, San Francisco, says it's so bad it should listed as a toxic substance.

While they don't suggest banning it, they do think people aren't aware of how hazardous it is, and steps should be taken to restrict sales and availability in much the same way we do with alcohol and tobacco. Their thought is that by increasing the public's awareness of the dangers of excessive sugar consumption through these measures, we can "actually increase people's choices by making foods that aren't loaded with sugar comparatively easier and cheaper to get."

According to the report, consumption of sugar has tripled worldwide in the last 50 years, leading to an increase in metabolic diseases such as the obvious obesity and type 2 diabetes, but also liver disease, heart disease and some types of cancer.

What the researchers suggest is that you can't just look at someone and know they are being affected by too much sugar consumption: "40 percent of people with metabolic syndrome -- the key metabolic changes that lead to diabetes, heart disease and cancer -- are not clinically obese." So just because you look healthy doesn't mean this isn't affecting you, too.

A quick glance at the list of health problems that can be caused by chronic fructose consumption (too much sugar) versus chronic ethanol (too much booze -- which, the study points out, is a sugar-based beverage) consumption shows a lot of overlaps as well. Who knew? Well, now we all do.

Eventually, everything in the world will be deemed bad for human consumption or activity.. Add all the 'don'ts' together and these people won't be satisfied until we all are eating nothing but dried grass clippings and running around in circles.

The only thing left to do is make everything against the law and tax everything that is left over.

The irony is that doctors use, inject, prescribe more toxins, create more drug dependencies, kill more people than any other 'caring' organization.

Have the taken into account that most sugar and how it is treated during processing is bleached maybe they should look into that vs. the Raw sugar that is in Health food Stores. Also genetics  and most folks don't eat in Moderation anyways. With all of that they need to think about that .Especially on how Most food is processed and the Chemicals that are pit in there during processing.

Thank you for your two paragraph summation / paraphrasing of an issue that you probably researched for about an hour. "I know! Let's throw the word toxic in the headline!" Please at least try to do your dying profession some justice by putting some thought into these "articles" and stop trying to fill the space between the adds, giant photos, and videos. We're not as dumb as you might think.

lol.. agree.. but it takes poor research (ucsf professors proclaiming this nonsense) for the lemmings to follow.

Metabolic disorders such as diabetes have recently been found to be highly correlated to activities in microbiota (bacterial colonies/disorders) in your intestinal track, not sugar intake. This article or research seems highly flawed or likely for conjecture by ascribing symptoms to etiological roots such as 'too much sugar creates diabetes' This is simply false, do your homework on it -- I'm not even a doctor or researcher either. Sugar is the body's number one source for energy. To believe otherwise it foolish. We are victims of foreign codependent species invaders not by our number one source for energy: glucose, sucrose, and carbohydrates.

Not sure if you're the author replying but 'sugar' means a lot of things ranging from carbs to fruit contents to supposedly lesser healthy forms that you're (author) targeting as bad.

I can't argue with you about the fact that bacteria, if generally are really the causal agents in all the obesity and diabetes malaise, that their disruption needs to be respected as if the normally healthy substances (ALL sugars I'm saying in my original reply -- not just some).does indeed become toxic. But lets not mislead people to think these substances are likely inherently toxic.. you notice the opposite in pure environments not contaminated by major blinding factors like bacteria and their myriad of products we can't predict unlike our own DNA and native somatic cytology. Its a process known as horizontal gene transfer and it leads to the allowance of toxic invaders that misuse substances like sugars to produce invisible toxins that we're believing are making 'sugar' itself bad.. FALSE.

I'm not the author. I'm not sure what your level of experience or education is in the field of endocrinology or metabolic syndrome, but you seem to miss the point of what the authors are talking about. When it comes to food, there are good choices, and there are not so great choices. Foods with added sugar are on the list of not so great choices compared to those with no sugar added. Foods like bread, yoghurt, baked beans etc don't need added sugar but check the label next time you're at the supermarket and you might be surprised. Sugar has a very definite and clear effect on all hormones (not just insulin but also sex hormones and thyroid hormones) and liver function, and the average sugar intake of someone following a "healthy" diet is a lot greater than most would realise. I think you'll find the authors are referring to "sugar" as added sugar, primarily high fructose corn syrup, sugar, maltose, and other sweeteners used by the food industry.  The unneccesary food additives like sugar that really add no value to the overall health of a person go unnoticed due to the way that our society has gradually flooded the taste buds with sugar in every meal. The sheer volume of added sugar consumed is truly extraordinary, and that is before we add it to coffee and tea etc.I am not sure why you are so upset at the proposition that sugar is not really that good for health. Sugar the food is very different to carbohydrate the nutrient, and the authors do not state that all carbohydrates are bad - they say that sugar is bad. The main reason for this is that most packaged foods contain added sugar, and it's very difficult for people to make good choices when all they are faced with is 5 choices that all contain added sugar. Short of making everything from scratch, most people consume far more sugar than the body can deal with gracefully. Even if it was the case there was no evidence for what the authors are saying, lack of evidence of harm is not the same as evidence of lack of harm.

Whether sugar is a toxin or not, there is a movement to either place high taxes on sugar or put sugar into the same category as alcohol and put under the control of the DEA.

So a bag of sugar can only be purchased by someone 21 years old or over? In some areas, one can only purchase alcohol at a state run store. It appears ludicrous to imagine a box of sugar sitting on a shelf between a bottle of Jim Beam and a bottle of vodka. "Can I see your ID"? ..."What are you going to use this sugar for..."?..."Chocolate chip cookies, stay where you are, I have to call the authorities...the government will want to talk to you...." Sounds ludicrous...yes, but in a country where finger nail clippers is considered a deadly weapon or cell phone can get one arrested, it's not too far fetched.

There is a growing movement to handle salt, all red meats, and even many grain crops in the same way. It still comes down to 'in the name of freedom, we will tell you what to do, how to think, how to live..'

USA is becoming the 'free to can't do' country...

If bacterial colonies/yeast overgrowth etc are part of the problem for a person with diabetes, sugar will continue to feed the growth of that bacteria/yeast whatever is there. Continuing to eat sugar would be foolish regardless of whether the "cause" of the diabetes is the bacteria or the insulin resistance from some other cause.Sugar is not the body's number one source for energy, carbohydrates and fats are, with protein coming in closely behind. Carbohydrates are found in varying amounts in many foods including fruits, vegetables, meat, fish and whole grains, these foods also contain phytochemicals, phytosterols, vitamins, minerals and other cofactors that are essential for good health. Sugar is not an essential food in the way that vegetables are for example, sugar contains very little in the way of nutrition other than straight out simple carbohydrate - a nutrient group that is overconsumed by most people. Eat more veggies, eat less sugar holds as a good approach for most health conditions - diabetes or not. I agree that many people have problems with unwanted guests living in their intestinal tract - I am a clinician that does a lot of testing on my patients in this regard - however clinically a zero sugar/zero grain diet does play a role in getting rid of a lot of these bacteria and stopping them from coming back.

Sugar, aka Glucose, is used by the muscles for energy.

"Glucose (/ˈɡluːkoʊs/ or /-koʊz/; C6H12O6, also known as D-glucose, dextrose, or grape sugar) is a simple sugar(monosaccharide) and an important carbohydrate in biology. Cells use it as the primary source of energy[1] and a metabolic intermediate. Glucose is one of the main products of photosynthesis and starts cellular respiration."  - REF: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G...

Odd that it also happens to be a toxic substance... that should be regulated by the ...government.  Hmmmmm... shouldn't this be something that individuals and their doctor's manage for themselves?  Oh, maybe the Government has to manage it for us because the people who work in Government are so very wise, and capable, and all-knowing.  Whew... that's a big relief.  I was getting a little tired of that whole "personal freedom" thing anyway.  Let Government decide for me.  So what that my muscles atrophy and I waste away under the new Government anti-sugar crusade.  We should not complain.  After all, by obeying the Government Administrators we show loyalty to the President and his Party.  And that, after all, is the most important thing in the whole wide world.  So don't be selfish.  Let them rule over you.  Otherwise what fun can they have?  So selfish!  No wonder you belong in a re-education camp.
