10 Best Sushi Restaurants in Los Angeles

The Joy of Sushi

Does Los Angeles boast the best sushi in the entire country? If even Ferran Adriá is on our side, we can probably feel confident it's true.

The factors that allow our city to be blessed with such a ridiculous bounty are fairly apparent: proximity to superior fish markets, a healthy roster of master itamae, and a populace hungry for exotic and healthful cuisine. But exactly which among them are the finest of the finest?

Our wallets are significantly lighter and our mercury levels rival Jeremy Piven's, but the extensive research was worth it -- we've finally compiled our own list of the finest sushi experiences available without a passport. Turn the page.

Sushi Kimagure Ike
10. Sushi Kimagure Ike:
It felt fitting when Sushi Ike decamped from its spot on Hollywood and Vine to become Sushi Kimagure Ike, a hidden shop in Old Pasadena that's so close to the Metro tracks you might initially confuse it with a ticket office. Chef Ike is a reserved man with something approaching a cult following - he is more at ease in this humble space than at a celebrity hot spot. But here the toro still melts like slices of aged ribeye, and the grilled octopus - a crowd favorite - still has any trace of chewiness massaged out, rendering it as smooth and tender as the firmest tofu. His chawanmushi, a steamed egg custard filled with bits of whitefish, shrimp, and mushrooms, might be the perfect kind of thing to fortify the bones before a chilly evening's walk. Ike is a good man to develop a rapport with - aim to differentiate yourself from the Kevin Federline and Heidi Montage types that used to pop up at Sushi Ike and you'll be dutifully rewarded. 220 S. Raymond Ave., Pasadena, (626) 535-0880, $$$$

Hiko Sushi
9. Hiko Sushi:
The spirit of the recently retired Kazunori Nozawa (of SugarFish fame) lives on at this cramped counter in Palms. All the hallmarks of Nozawa's Edo-purist style are here: the loosely packed vinegar-pungent rice served piping hot, the unaltered slabs of pure oceanic flesh, the unmistakable airing of that "sushi nazi" bravado. But the man working the fish, Shinji Murata -- who once worked under Nozawa -- surpasses the master at his own game. The parade of cheap plastic plates filled with nigiri: taut sheets of albacore, baby tuna dashed with ponzu, sea bass with pickled seaweed and the eventual blue crab handroll might seem basic to an advanced aficionado, but under the guiding hand of Murata the traditional become revelatory. Nozowa was known to have softened his strict set of rules in later years; Murata, on the other hand, is sharp as ever - and still willing to send someone arriving late for their reservation out to the curb. 11275 National Blvd., L.A., (310) 473-7688, $$$$

nozomi.jpg
Nozomi
8. Nozomi:
In the shadow of the Japanese multinational headquarters that line Torrance's Western Boulevard is Nozomi, a minimalist space that feels closer to a neighborhood haunt than any type of intimidating sushi temple. It would be wise to ask for Chef Yasu, an ebullient man who seems to always be quick with a joke and a glass of sake. It's been rumored that Yasu has the best Santa Barbara uni connections in the city - a point that seems all but confirmed when a slip of fresh sea urchin unfurls on your tongue like a briny wave of surf. There's even more, though: slivers of sea bream lined with transparent sheets of kelp, tender squares of squid dotted with umeboshi plum, red snapper dapped with salty sesame paste. He might even give a wink and introduce an oversize squirming shrimp as one of his favorite pets - poor guy, a few courses later it arrives as a bowl of miso soup with a shrimp head bobbing in the middle. 1757 W. Carson Blvd., Torrance, (310) 320-5511, $$$$

Are there any caterers in Los Angeles that can provide sushi this glamours looking? I am hoping to throw an exquisite party in about a month (this is a very important shindig that could change the course of my career and my life), and I think if I could deliver food that looks this amazing, and tastes as good as it looks, that it will blow my guests away. Anybody have any suggestions? Or am I putting to much importance on the food?

One of the spendy fish dining establishments in Beverly Mountains, Crustacean provides environment with a large cup ground container that you have got to see to believe. The selection is a variety of People from france and Vietnamese fish delicacies.

Haha wow reading these comments is like reading a fan war between apple and android fan boys for a gadget review!

I currently live in Denver but am originally from Hawaii and have family and friends in and thus frequent LA. I'm a huge but poor sushi fiend and would love the opportunity to try all of the places listed both in the reviews and comments (been to Sasabune both in hawaii and La and prefer the one in hawaii but I'm sure there's better).

Like many things sushi can be subjective beyond a certain baseline and unless you frequent a place enough to account for all of the variations that might occur (i say this even though I tell people that at a truly good sushi or Japanese restaurant there's no such thing as a "bad day") you won't be able to please every reader.

Thanks for the checklist for my future visits!

What is this list? If you’re really going to go so far as to say here’s the list of the BEST SUSHI IN LA, you really should’ve done your homework. I’m not saying what my favorite sushi place is because I don’t want everyone flocking there, but to say Kiriko is #2, is a crock of sh*t! It actually makes me angry.

Garret Snyder needs to take a trip to Japan, refine his palate, then revisit his sushi restaurant list. I think he’ll be embarrassed with his previous (or current) findings. I went to Kiriko three weeks ago and was upset that the quality had gone downhill. I wanted to love it but the rice was not seasoned with any sushi vinegar, and the cuts of fish were way too thick and sinewy. Sinewy! That’s just wrong. It was quite shocking, actually. Garrett is a nice person, I’m sure, but if LA Weekly is OK with letting him muddy their sushi credibility, then they just lost a reader. LA Weekly should no longer be a relevant reference when researching restaurants.

Maya-san:Thank you for your comment. Yet, I am Japanese too. I do not live in Los Angeles. Mainly, I live in Tokyo. Sometimes, I come to L.A.for my business. Probably you know about American Sushi in Southern CA more than I know; however, I cannot believe people, who talk about quantity(thick or thin) instead of balance of rice and Neta. I do not think you are Japanese who was born in Japan. In Tokyo, I like Sawada or Masuda for Sushi in Ginza. They are genius. I have been to Mizutani, Jiro, Araki, Ohno, Kyubei, Sasaki, Taichi and Aozora etc.. Jiro is great sushi restaurant. I always finsh eating Jiro's Nigiri within 25 minutes, but I do not think Jiro is the best sushi restaurant in Japan although thier film seems like very popular in the Unites States. BTW, Could you please tell me your best Sushi restaurant in Japan?I think this 10 best sushi restaurants in Los Angeles list is very very reasonable. In Los Angeles, there are few great sushi restaurants. I have been to Kiriko sushi only once, but I can say that quality and creativity are there. I have also been to Urasawa only once. For me, Kiriko's menu was much more interesting than Urasawa's one. As for Urasawa, I cannot relax when I eat sushi. Probably, you agree with me ha!? I do not believe Katsuya, Matsuhisa, Sushi gen, Sasabune, Sushi Zo, Sushi sushi, Sushi Ike and Nozawa serve authentic Japanese sushi, but I like Mori, Takao, Kiriko, Kiyokawa, Shibucho, Tama, and Fukuno. Can you tell me the best sushi restaurant in L.A.? I would like to go there. Don't worry I live in Japan. I cannot go your favorite restaurant every weekend. Please tell me what kind of vinegar Kiriko sushi uses and percentage of vinegar in rice? I am sure that you still remember it because you lately go there.

I believe American foodie people are sometimes far better than moodie Japanese.

If you cannot answer my questions, and you cannot tell us about your favorite sushi restaurants, you are, at least, not deserved to complain about this list.

Wow, that's convenient. You'll happily criticize Snyder's list but then offer up ZERO suggestions of your own? Because you don't want people flocking there? LOL. That's one of the worst cop-outs I've heard in a while.

This list is perfect, and Kiriko is well deserved. It seems like Maya does not know anything about Sushi. Good Job Garret Snyder!!!!

Next time you visit Torrance hit Sen Nari on Western and 182nd. It will end up on your next sushi list. Maybe a list of best in Torrance is in order being that it is to Japanese what Glendale is to Armenians.

No Sasabune, Sushi-Gen, Nishimura, Matsuhisa, Chiba to name a few? No wonder we miss Jonathan Gold...

Do you seriously think Jonathan Gold would have really put Sushi-Gen on this list? Get real...

Shadow Warrior

You're probably thinking S Irene Virbilla and not Jonathan Gold...

"Lately, I've been going a lot to Sushi Gen"

"Sushi Gen has everything you could want from a sushi bar: the white-fleshed albacore tuna, lightly seared at the edges to tighten the sweet flesh; ultrafresh halibut drizzled with sea salt and a few drops of ponzu; cool, unctuous slices of pickled mackerel whose taste practically oozes over the sushi's wasabi bite; crunchy, briny sheets of herring roe; crisp, broiled sea eel.

The nutty, clean, slightly bitter uni is maybe the best sea urchin I've ever had that wasn't attached to its shell -- the stuff is usually too funky for me, but this uni still tastes of the sea. Ankimo, monkfish liver, while lacking a little of the gorgeous luxuriousness of the same preparation at Shibucho, is pure, almost spartan, under its sprinkling of shredded daikon and tart ponzu sauce. And the sushi of giant longneck clam, sliced so thinly that you can count the grains of rice underneath it, is fine."

I am Japanese from Japan. Sushi Gen's Sushi is not authentic Sushi. They are business like Americanized place. 100% not for foodie!!!! I am glad that Sushi gen, Katsuya Chiba and Sasabune were not on the list.
