New Altadena Urban Farmers Market Coming in May
After many months of planning meetings and wrangling with local permits and bureaucracy, Joseph Shuldiner -- founder of the Institute of Domestic Technology -- can finally announce the May 30 start date for the new and highly anticipated Altadena farmers market at Loma Alta Park. It'll be right next to the green thumb-inspiring Altadena Community Garden, which hopefully will have members on hand to share their secret for 15-foot sunflowers.

Kenter Canyon Farms, L.A. Bread Bakers, Suncoast Farm, Backwards Beekeepers, Plus Plow & Gun, Mother Moo Creamery and Drake Family Farms are a handful of the local vendors confirmed for the weekly Wednesday market. Unlike the other Wednesday market of note, the Wednesday Santa Monica market, the Altadena market will keep later hours, opening at 3 p.m. and closing at 7 p.m.
"I'm super excited about putting this inaugural group of sellers together," Shuldiner said. "They will firmly establish Altadena as the epicenter of the burgeoning urban-food movement."
Altadena has been growing its urban-farming reputation for years, serving as the home base for a vibrant homestead community of food crafters, composters, chicken keepers and even a small goat micro-dairy -- Mariposa Creamery -- that teaches cheese craft and urban goat-keeping and hosted Altadena's short-lived but vibrant underground urban farmers market.
The new Altadena market is sponsored by Altadena Heritage and will be operated and managed by the Institute for Domestic Technology. A formal market announcement will be made at the Altadena Town Council Meeting on April 17 at the Altadena Community Center.
Altadena Farmers Market: Loma Alta Park, 3330 Lincoln Ave., Altadena; Wednesdays, 3-7 p.m., starting May 30.
