BierBeisl: A New Austrian Restaurant, a Sausage Special + Where to Celebrate Freud's Birthday
Repressed? Depressed? Hungry? You can deal with all of these in one place starting May 6. That's when BierBeisl, the new Austrian restaurant in Beverly Hills, will be packed with people who can help you -- therapists.![]()
B. Hansen Interior of BierBeisl
May 6 is the birthday of Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis. Freud was Austrian, as is BierBeisl's chef owner, Bernhard Mairinger, who will honor his countryman with a sausage special that runs through May 11. Order any two sausages and receive a third free. Sit at the communal table and you just might be joined by a few of the mental health practitioners who have made Beverly Hills their capital.
Be prepared to explain why you chose the kasekrainer (infused with Swiss cheese) instead of the debreziner (spicy, thin, similar to wieners) and just what early memories made you long for weisswurst (simmered in milk, served with a salty pretzel) and why eating bratwurst with sauerkraut helps you relate to your father. These and other sausages on the menu are made locally from Austrian recipes supplied by Mairinger.![]()

If you're really stressed, you can relax with an Austrian beer such as Stiegl, Trumer Pils or Schwarbler. If your cravings are out of control, you can get the sausages almost any time, until midnight on weeknights and 1 a.m. on Saturdays. And if indecision is your problem, you can cope by sampling a variety of both on a sausage and beer tasting menu.
When you leave, you should be feeling good. As a wise therapist once said, "Ist doch alles wurst." Or, it's all the same in the end.
