Altadena's John Muir High Starts Produce Subscription Service
Los Angeles is no stranger to C.S.A. (community supported agriculture) subscriptions -- services that offer a curated box of fresh, seasonal produce delivered or picked up each week by community members for a monthly fee -- but none of them quite resemble the latest project from Atladena's John Muir High. The school will be using fruits and vegetables from Muir Ranch, a 1.5-acre urban farm that's run completely by that school's students, to create a weekly subscription available to locals via a pick-up site at either Muir Ranch or Pasadena Unified School District's headquarters on Thursday evenings.

Subscribers receive in their boxes seven to ten different fruits and vegetables, grown at Muir Ranch and at a nearby farm. Program Director Mud Baron expanded the program to help his students learn management and sales practices (students interact with customers, providing produce samples and recruiting customers) as well as the value of fresh healthful food.
The prices are some of the cheapest we've seen for weekly produce, never mind the fact that Muir Ranch operates as a non-profit, meaning the cost is tax-deductible.
Half Share, $60 per month
Feeds 2-3 people
$15 per week
Full Share, $100 per month
Feeds 4-6 people
$25 per week
Flower Share
$10, $15 or $25 per week based on bouquet size.
If you aren't close enough to make the weekly trek for a subscription, Muir Ranch also sells a small selection of produce at the Altadena, Hollywood, and Pasadena Farmer's Markets.
