Updated, 2:33 p.m.: Raphael Brion, Editor of Eater National, claims via Twitter that the confusion is actually the fault of USA Today, which changed their story without citing the change on the web. He also provided a link to a cached version of the USA Today story that indeed claimed Andres would be part of the New York hotel venture. So ... still terrible internet etiquette, but not on the part of Eater or The Braiser, but on the part of USA Today.

It spread like wildfire, on blogs, on Twitter: Jose Andres is opening a restaurant in New York!! Or...is he?

Not so much.

The original article, published by USA Today, reports that SLS Hotels will be opening a boutique hotel in Manhattan's Nomad neighborhood. The article notes that SLS's hotels in L.A. and Miami have Bazaar restaurants in them lead by Andres, but very clearly states "The SLS hotels in L.A. and Miami have Bazaar restaurants featuring celebrity chef Jose Andres' unique version of tapas and creative drinks, but it's not clear if that will be part of the New York hotel." (Emphasis ours.)

So much for close reading. The Braiser, a New York based chef news and gossip blog, reported "Jose Andres To Open First New York Restaurant At SLS Hotel," citing the USA Today story as confirmation. Eater New York also posted a story proclaiming that Andres was opening in New York (the post has since been updated, but not before Andres tweeted at Eater that he was still in negotiations with the hotel and nothing was finalized.

Ah, the internet. Where someone can misread an article, write a whole story based on the misinformation, set off a string of other stories based on their wrong story, and probably influence the story they're reporting on in the process.

USA Today quietly changed the story without a correction. It originally read "Jose Andres, who'll create another Bazaar restaurant..." We were all had; there was no "misreading."
