3 Tons of Trader Joe's BBQ Chicken Salad Recalled
Nearly three tons of prepared barbecue chicken salads sold at Trader Joe's have been recalled, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service. The recall comes after the announcement of possible Listeria contamination at Oxnard-based Gills Onions, Trader Joe's onion supplier, Medical Daily reports. (Bet you thought it was the chicken or the lettuce!) It is a Class 1 recall, meaning the health risk is considered "high."

About 5,610 pounds of the Trader Joe's salads were distributed among five West Coast states including Southern California, Arizona, southern Nevada, New Mexico and Texas. The package contains the identification number P-11079 and the use-by date July 30. They were prepared by Huxtable's Kitchen of Vernon, Calif. (So that's what little Rudy is doing now.)
That's a lot of bad salad.
No illnesses have been reported to the FSIS. Gills Onions is collaborating with the FDA and a team of external microbiologists to figure out the cause of the contamination. The company has shut down operations and has begun redesigning the facility where the onions were processed.
Trader Joe's also announced a recall on the following products containing the onions: Trader Joe's Fresh Mild Salsa; Balela; Roasted Butternut Squash, Red Quinoa & Wheatberry Salad; and Trader Joe's Diced Onions, Garlic & Shallots Blend.
If you have any of these products in your fridge, return them to your local Trader Joe's for a full refund. Gills also is recalling all of its diced and slivered fresh onion products.
Return these to the place of purchase for a refund.
If you have consumed any of the products and experienced any Listeria-related symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, nausea or diarrhea, head to your doctor's office.
According to California's Department of Public Health, Listeria is no joke, with a mortality rate of 20 percent.
