Latter-Day Sodas: Mormon Church Approves Pepsi + Coke

Sodas Galore
Well, it's official -- after an announcement by the Utah-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Wednesday, one mystery surrounding the Mormon faith has been dispelled for good: Caffeinated sodas are now fair game for thirsty church members.

A statement on the LDS website states that "the church does not prohibit the use of caffeine" and that the faith's health-code reference to "hot drinks" ''does not go beyond (tea and coffee)." While that might not quite satisfy Mormons looking for an alternative to their cup of decaf coffee, it's good news for those who can't resist the pull of an icy can of pop (which includes Mitt Romney, who is known to have a fondess for Diet Coke while on the campaign trail).

Can we look forward to Sermon on the Mountain Dew, a special collector's edition flavor endorsed by the church? Only time will tell, but we imagine that most church members won't be losing much sleep over the whole issue -- unless, of course, they drank too much caffeine.

Pretty silly, the caffeine thing? Where's the article on the 'silly' Jewish position on pork and kosher food? how 'bout Catholics policy on fish...whatever that is?

Yes, the Mormons have some pretty silly beliefs. Can you say anything different about every other religion?

Caffeine has never been officially against the Church's teaching.  As I see it, some people, even church members, speculating as to why coffee and tea are prohibited decided it must be because both have caffeine and then, treating their own speculation as truth revealed from on high, extended the ban to caffeinated sodas, etc.

The Church is simply refuting the speculation and reminding everyone of what the standard really is.  If an individual wants to refrain from imbibing caffeinated drinks they are free to do so but they may not impose that standard on others and point to Church doctrine while doing so.

Actually...they updated the "official" announcement and removed all the parts you refer to on the morning of the 30th of August.
