Happily in time for Halloween, the u-pick apple farms in Oak Glen are in the midst of a terrific season. Heirloom varieties of apples -- Pippins and Winesaps, Rome Beauties and Jonathans -- pressed cider, corn mazes, pumpkin patches and a chance to get out of town for some farm nostalgia. Just head east from L.A. to Yucaipa, about 100 miles and almost up 5,000 feet up into the hills to Riley's Apple Farm, to name one of the small pantheon of family-owned farms in the area. No, you can't climb the apple trees -- but you can think about it. Check out the slideshow, taken Sunday, Oct. 14.

The farm stays open until through the Thanksgiving weekend; see the website for times and apple availability. (Gravensteins are over, Arkansas Black are yet to come.) And do not forget the caramel apples: Pick your variety and watch as your apple is dipped in a pot of warm caramel and presented, still warm, the swirled caramel like swaddling, on a bit of wax paper. Perhaps the perfect dessert.
