What's the Most Underrated Burger in Los Angeles?

"The Classic" at Burger Lounge
L.A. is a burger town. We fetishize the burger perhaps more than any other city in the country, and we have plenty of burgers that have attained cult status. And while some of those burgers might be a tad overrated, we're not interested in that for right now. Instead, we'd like to know about the unsung burgers -- the burgers that deserve cult status but have been bypassed for some reason by the burger-eating hordes.

What do you think is the most underrated burger in L.A.? Let us know in the comments. Next week, we'll take those answers, pick the best suggestions, and set up a poll here on Squid Ink. The two burgers with the most votes will get a visit from us, the LA Weekly critics, and a winner will be announced -- the most underrated burger in town.

So, Los Angeles, who should wear the underrated burger crown?

Stout. Plus they have excellent beer to go with their excellent burgers.

Easily Fred's Downhome Burgers.  On Slauson, most don't choose to venture down to that part of town, leading it to receive little publicity, but easily one of the best burgers in town.

Super Burger in Pasadena makes an outstanding fast food-style burger. Check out the reviews (and photos) on Yelp.

Beachwood BBQ!
Beachwood's Smokehouse Burger is made with a mix of smoked brisket and sirloin steak, with caramelized onions and herbs mixed into the meat. Your choice of cheddar or a generous amount of bleu cheese and traditional burger fixings including a house made aioli. The lunch menu of their original Seal Beach location offers a sandwich of the day which in the past has included greats like a venison burger with mushrooms and gruyere.
Combine that with a world class beer selection and sides ranging from traditional french fries or sweet potato fries to my favorites like fried green tomatoes, vanilla scented pecan yams, smoked asparagus, and green beans topped with a bacon & onion ragout. Beachwood simply can not be beat.

Sardo's in the Von's complex on Pass Ave. in Toluca Lake/Burbank has some seriously delicious burgers. My favorite, the Sardo's Burger, has Ortega chilis and comes served on their signature grilled garlic bread...reminds me of an East coast pub burger in the best possible way. Plus, this dive bar/restaurant has personality and charm to spare!

LUCKY DEVILS TAVERN on Hollywood Blvd. has the best Burgers, Pizza, craft beers and now casked wine in town. Try The Short Rib Sliders, you won't be disapointed !!

- Fusion Burger in Highland Park. Better prices than Umami with more burgers to choose from. And the sides are interesting. Pickled everything!

- Tavern on Brand in Glendale. Their burgers surprised me completely -- house-ground meat charred perfectly and still with pink juiciness -- mostly because I thought it would be pub grub. Prices are not good unless it's daytime and they have the buy-a-beer, hamburger's-discounted deal... I think it's like $5 or $8.

Everest in Santa Clarita does it for me ya'lls. The bacon, avocado burger + mushrooms...OMG!!!! The best burger I have had in quite some time.

I stand by everyone who says Stout, but my vote goes to Bowery (Hollywood/Vine). With those spots so close by you never need to eat the city's most overrated burger at Umami.

Daglas in Resada is still one of my go to burgers. It's old an old fashion burger and it's a greasy in your face piece of heaven.

"Burgers, Brews, & Blues" is one of the best experiences to have in South Pasadena on a Thursday evening at Firefly Bistro. Get there early cause it fills up fast. I like to get there right when it begins!

I an not a fan of UMAMI Burger. . . They are small, thought they are packed w/ flavor, but I always end up eating somewhere else to get filled up after I leave. I would go back w/ another friend and order 3 different kinds, then cut them in half and critique each one and how it made us feel

The burgers at Gus' BBQ in South Pasadena on Fair Oaks is pretty good! It's now owned and operated by the people from Top's Burgers in Pasadena! The cuisine is now Southern, so you'll get uniquely different kind of burger!

On Thurdays from 5pm to 8pm in South Pasadena hidden inside the Thursday Farmers Market right at Mission Goldline Light Rail Station, is a place called Firefly Bistro http://www.eatatfirefly.com/ and they offer a great time called "Burgers, Brews, and Blues" It never disappoints and you can always get a new experience every week. They offer their regular burger, Special burger of the day, and the Vegie/Vegan burger of the day. It's paired w/ a great beer. Then you have live BLUES being performed right before you as you eat! Check out the site to see pics and details of this event every Thursday!

How about that Korean/German/Mexican pub in Koreatown on Western called BIERGARTEN ! They have great burgers!

I like "The Counter Burger: Custom Built Burgers" http://www.thecounterburger.com/ especially the one in Pasadena cause it's kinda hidden. It's right next door to Green St. Restaurant in the alley near Lake & Cordova. I like the Counter's Market Burger of the Month selections which never seems to disapoint me. And they have great options like "Burger in a Bowl" which is more or less a Burger Salad for those who don't want carbs, except for BEER and WINE!

For those who ar fanatics of the L.A. Iconic burger truck GRILL 'EM ALL, they will soon be open w/ their very own brick & mortar restaurant in Alhambra on the corner of Garfield & Main hopefully by this December!

Doghaus Dogs: Oldtown Pasadena (only one that serves beer & alcohol), East Pasadena near P.C.C. on Hill & Union, and their newest one in Alhambra on Main Street east of Garfield. Their burgers and dogs are served on toasted Kings Hawaiian Rolls http://www.doghausdogs.com/ check out the menu for yourself!

I second kchang's pick, the TOPS Special at The Original Tops in Pasadena is awesome and I've never heard it mentioned once in burger discussions.  Sure, it's kind of a hybrid, piled high with delicious pastrami (honestly, looking at it, you'd think it'd taste like a pastrami sandwich with a hint of burger), but when you take a bite, it really is all burger, but with that extra something-something from the pastrami.  SO good.  I think I just convinced myself to go get one right now.

For a good, no-frills burger experience... I always recommend Wolfe Burger in Pasadena. The mushroom and swiss is my favorite. And no hidden or secret menu!

The Original Tops Special (pastrami burger).  The pastrami has just the right amount of spice to perfectly complement the beef patty.  We drive all the way from the Westside to Pasadena to get our Original Tops burger fix.
