Dunkin' Donuts Moves Into Southern California

Watch out, Intelligentsia and The Donut Man. Dunkin' Donuts is coming to Los Angeles. The Massachussetts-based company, which was founded in 1950 in Quincy, Mass., announced plans to expand to Southern California this morning. They're recruiting now for franchises in L.A., Riverside, San Diego, San Bernardino, Ventura and Orange counties. The new doughnut and coffee shops are expected to open in 2015.

Dunkin' Donuts, according to The NPD Group / CREST®, serves the most hot regular, decaf, flavored and iced coffee in America. How much is that? 1.7 billion cups of the stuff.

The company, which also competes with Starbucks and Krispy Kreme, is looking to expand to non-traditional locations, specifically "colleges and universities, casinos, military bases, supermarkets, airports and travel centers." As opposed to all those strip malls. Whatever works.

My favorite Dunkin' Donuts was in a slightly decrepit fishing village in the Atlantic Provinces, where a cup of OK coffee and a cruller seemed revelatory. Not sure how much revelation we're going to get when a macchiato from LAMill is around the corner, but what do I know. Lower price point means a lot.

Being from NY, I used to have a special place in my heart for DD, but since moving to LA, I've learned that DD's donuts not longer tickle my taste buds like they did as a child. I used to enjoy their iced coffee more too, with those heaping spoonfuls of sugar and milk, but those too have lost their nostalgia. Stay away Dunkin Donuts, we don't need you here.

I heard dunkin will make the donuts in China and ship them to the US frozen, then thawed to order.

It;s coffee is a little strong but get it at the grocers and make it to suit your taste and it can't be beat.

We got Winchell's and Yum Yum donuts out here although Yum Yum owns Winchell's.  Both are very good, but I'm eager to check out the Dunkin' Donuts.  Have heard a lot of good things about them. :)

@fyrwlkr1961 Not happening anytime soon. Oregon, Washington are no plans of expansion for at least another 5 years.

Dunkin Donuts is not new to California by any means, they used to have 15 stores, but closed the last one in Sacramento in 2002.

@socalrailroader You are correct. Wrong time for the market. California consumes more coffee and donuts than any other state in the country.

I happen to like DD and when I moved from MA to SoCal I was a bit confused.  My sister, in MA, had sent me a DD gift cerrtificate for Christmas in 2011 and I was so excited.  My excitement was dashed. I used it when I was flying back east in Aug., and I had a layover in Texas.  I bought a large Iced Coffee to take on the plane with me only to have it fall out of my hand just before I walked into the plane.  I was crushed, I hadn't even taken a sip of it.  Okay, that is enough.  I am excited to have DD out here in SoCal.  I just hope they put one in Temecula.

Double D,opened a store/shop close to home last year.I live in a suburb of Milwaukee WI. In getting to know the workers,I found out they get the "lard cakes" trucked in from Chicago. It's all just a magic act, tricking the "hipsters", uninformed,bankers/investers.

Dunks sucks. You aren't missing anything in LA. Their coffee is overrated. I'll pass on the stale donuts and terrible customer service too! Take this from someone that lives in Boston where there's a Dunks on every corner.

Don't get too excited. I grew up in PA eating Dunkin Donuts and they're not that good. Winchell's is better, not to mention Krispy Kreme. Now if we could get more Spudnuts or Donut Man locations that would be cause for celebration.

Dunkin Donuts sucks. And I'm a Bostonian. Hopefully it will be a short fad before everyone realizes how terrible it is.

Let me also add that there are a lot of DD in the San Fernando Valley. So, I take it the writer is excited that it's coming to LA Prime -- and not considering suburban cities outside urban LA. I guess that's why it's called, "LA Weekly,"

@Edwin A. Santos You are so wrong. There isnt a single one in California except in San Diego. Grow a brain!

After I read the headline, I'm reminded of a quote from "The X-Files." From the character, Deep Throat -- "They've been here for a long, long time."

We had one here on the PCH that closed down. This is Krispy Kreme market over-saturation all over again. Anything that's gonna cut into Starbuck's, greedy, bottom line might be ok but this isn't the second coming of Christ Our Savior.

Dunkin Donuts opened a store on Harbor Blvd & Warner Ave in Fountain Valley at least 30 years ago and has locations throughout Orange County. WTF is the big announcement?

Overrated. Better donuts around LA. McD coffee is better. Definitely an East Coast thing.

They're expanding in Austin, Texas as well. Thanks to former UT QB#1 McCoy - glad public education taught him how to use his NFL millions. DD will fail in both locations. Mom & Pop donuts (and kolaches) forever!
