Chipotle Testing Out Tofu

Chipotle is testing out tofu in their menus. The Tex-Mex chain recently announced that they're trying out a new item called Sofritas in seven San Francisco Bay Area restaurants beginning Feb. 12. "It's seared and browned and braised like a sofrito," Chipotle communications director Chris Arnold told Squid Ink.

What it is: shredded tofu braised with chipotle chilis, roasted poblanos and a blend of aromatic spices. The soy is made from GMO-free tofu from Oakland's Hodo Soy -- a Bay Area supplier known for whole bean tofu.

The Sofritas will be available in burritos, tacos, burrito bowls and salads. Although there's no word whether or not the tofu products will make it down to Los Angeles, Arnold hinted that if the test is successful, they will be slowly making their way throughout California.

"We've tried other vegan-friendly items in the past and we weren't really happy with it," Arnold said. "The Sofritas is more what we're after. It's vegan but it tastes just as amazing and we think it'll have a broader appeal than just vegetarians."

This is fabulous!  I had it today in South San Jose and loved it - it tasted like a chicken burrito but with more flavor actually!

I just don't see a need for tofu. It's good enough with rice, beans, veggies and guacamole. Meh.

I miss gardein :\ but I'd take this over no other option.  Sounds decent.

That might work. As long as it's well marinated, mock meat does just fine in burritos.

Sharkey's has a lot of tofu choices - all good. Meat lovers will hate it, but we vegetarians will be happy to have more options! Hope it goes well.

Moe's already serves a tofu burrito. And to all the anti-GMO bandwagon jumpers out there, GET OVER YOURSELVES!!! If it were not for genetically engineered products, do you have a clue what the farming and manufacturing industries in this country would be like? Imagine a price swing of over $50 for a plain cotton T-shirt, all because of a dry year (like the past one we just had) which would decimate cotton crops. Or how about the corn fed to your so called GMO free livestock (not in this profit marginalized utopia that we live in). Point is, that Organic label slapped on your food (more than likely printed on GMO derived paper product) is nothing more than clever marketing used to appease the self-righteous consumer. Emphasis on the word consumer.

I'd try it. I tried the vegan chicken pollo rojo or whatever the fuck when I was at Whole Foods Berkeley a while ago. Wasn't impressed. I prefer tofu in Asian dishes in which tofu is the main ingredient. I don't like it as a meat substitute.

I would order vegetarian options... but would never spend a penny at a McDonalds/ Chipotle... or any other disgusting fast food place.

I hate answering a question with a question but by only response would have to be "why?".

I would love to... except all Soy produced in the US is GMO. Unless it's organic.

Ryan Fabian, traditional cultures only consumed soya in a fermented state (tempeh, natto, miso, etc). Not to mention it wasn't highly processed like most soy-based foods manufactured today. We like traditional foods and highly processed factory formed soya fake meat isn't one of them. Studies or not, soya is not a good alternative to properly raised meat.

If you liked Mexican food, you wouldn't eat at Chipotle.

Sure, I'd eat two and a pint of beer. No conclusive evidence that soy is "poison", Farmhouse Kitchen. You can site all the faulty studies you want, I've seen them all. It's a good alternative for people who don't want to eat meat.
