BierBeisl's Bernhard Mairinger says there are so many great restaurants in L.A., he could start his own blog about them -- if he had time, that is. But he found time to give us the lowdown on three of his favorite spots. Turn the page for Mairinger's picks.
"I like the experience and the whole theme of the restaurant. It is unique, weird in a way, but still a lot of fun. My favorites are the uni sticky bun, avocado ceviche roll -- and by far the best thing on the menu is the Philly cheese steak! They also serve one of the best gin & tonics that L.A. offers. As a bonus, a dear friend of mine is the GM there and I enjoy having a drink with him on the patio after his shift."
2. Robata Jinya:
Waylynn Lucas recommended me that small hidden place on 3rd Street just down the street from her Fonut factory, and I think I have eaten there ever since pretty much every other week. I love their oyster and uni shooters. One of the best ramens in town -- it is something I could eat every day. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is welcoming and cozy. For the high quality served it's a very reasonable priced sushi/Japanese restaurant -- one of my secret favorites."
"I am a great fan of Thomas Keller's cooking -- straight out great food. Clean flavors, the freshest ingredients at the highest level in a beautiful location. Sometimes just sipping an espresso and enjoying a pastry downstairs at the bakery is like a little trip back to Europe for me. I am actually planning a trip up north to Yountville soon. I have never dined at the French Laundry and it is on the top of my want list right now."
