Beefsteak Dinner 2011
Last year's Beefsteak dinner at Vibiana's downtown was a pretty epic affair. An ode to old-timey New York, it was boisterous, use-your-hands, all-you-can-eat steak and beer drinking party based on the famous 1939 New Yorker story by Joseph Mitchell.

Our former food critic Jonathan Gold even chronicled it, describing such wondrous sights as, "[a] fat man, dressed in an old-fashioned bathing suit appliqued with fabric pork chops, danced up the length of the long tables, then down again, flouncing, jiggling, representing the abandon most of us would have aspired to if it hadn't been so much work."

Finger Lickin' Good

How's about this for some exciting news on National Fried Chicken Day? Starting on July 14, A-Frame will be offering all-you-can-eat fried chicken on Saturdays and Sundays from 12-3 p.m. for only $18. Chef Roy Choi has engineered his own "krispy" buttermilk fried chicken recipe using sous-vided thighs and legs, a blend of secret herb and spices, and a dredge through rice flour for crunch. But wait, there's more!

IKEA Serves Up Midsummer Smorgasbord Friday

Swedish meatballs with lingonberry sludge at IKEA
In Sweden, Norway and Finland, "Midsommar" -- celebrated the weekend closest to June 24 -- is an especially important holiday that's steeped in tradition and rivals Christmas in popularity. It marks the start of the summer season and celebrates joy and romance with maypole dancing, girls wearing bright floral wreaths, and all that other gay stuff.

But you don't need to buy a plane ticket to Stockholm or Oslo to get in on the festivities. To hail Midsummer (er, a week early), IKEA cafes across the country will be offering an all-you-can-eat Swedish buffet on Friday, June 15. Tickets are $2.49 for kids under 12 and $9.99 for adults. Seating is limited, so hurry in to pick up your tickets; hours vary by store. Turn the page for the menu.
